I blame everyone else for not making one before me.

Gretzky would be on the Kings and Oilers Mt. Rushmore. Bourque would maybe be on both the Bruins and Avs (though I would disagree with that). There's probably others but I'm struggling to come up with them.

So that's why I didn't vote for him.

A Flames D Mt. Rushmore is also fun to think of:

Macinnis, Suter, Gio: Slam dunks.

The 4th is trickier: for me it's Reinhart or Macoun. But you could actually make a pretty good argument for TJ Brodie.

These are fun exercises.

It is interesting to do a cursory pick for other teams

STL...I'm not sure MacInnis actually a lock there:

Federko - most gp and pts
Hull - 527goals, 744gp (more than I would have thought.

MacInnis is 14th with 613gp. Pronger is 16th with 598. Pietrangelo is 5th with 758gp, but the ending was a little sour.

Who is their greatest defenseman? The first two each have a Norris; AP captained them to a cup...would all 3 of them make Rushmore and bump Federko? What about Sutter, Steen, Backes, Tarasenko, Tkachuk, ROR, Binnington, Liut?

COL is interesting, too. Bourque does not get a sniff:
Sakic
Forsberg
Roy
MacKinnon
Makar
Landeskog
Hejduk
Foote
Rantanen

Sakic is a lock, but it's tough to pick 3 of those next 4 (presuming reasonable longevity for Makar)

I voted Iginla-Fleury-Fleury-Fleury.

I think it should be Iginla, Fleury, McDonald, and the fourth one is up for debate.

Peter Maher isn't getting near enough consideration.

This organization does not have a Stanley Cup without Mike Vernon. I wish more people would remember that.

I think you meant to say Sakic and Forsberg are locks.

100% agree. 30 is in the rafters for a reason.
Any vote for Backlund is perplexing. Don't get me wrong, he's been a great Flame and strong defensive forward. But if a 40-point centre is in your top four all time, that's very sad. Hopefully just a case of recency bias.

I think it’s you who doesn’t understand the criteria of a Mount Rushmore.

I voted for Backs for his tenure and dedication to the franchise and the community. Was also leaning towards Gio and Al. I already know Al is gonna win which is understandable

It's tough. It's between MacInnis, Giordano, Vernon for me.

Yeah you might be right about Bourque. I think Chopper makes the mountain for the Blues though but it’s not a sure thing
Which brings me back to what players would be on more than one Rushmore

^^ double rushmores, I guess Gio Flames/Kraken isn't happening

some that come to mind as candidates include Messier and Roy but in each case there is an original 6 team in the mix that makes them less likely (and with the current wonder twins, wonder where things settle out for the Oilers - not my problem)

Bure- don't think so

Selanne probably for the original Jets/Ducks I guess?

speaking of the Ducks, a few parallels with Niedermayer and the MacInnis situation (although Niedermayer's shorter tenure team was his cup team and the longer tenure one his Norris)

is Johnny already in the mix in Columbus

Well, if we are talking about Backlund on our Rushmore are we all that much better?

Don’t get me wrong, I like Backs, but it tells a story of the lack of success of our franchise if he’s in consideration.

Playing an entire career for a team isn’t jersey retirement worthy if you’re not a star. And it’s not monument worthy. Backs is a solid player and long-time Flame. But that’s it.
