Well no it costs them some cap room and such. And yes I’d rather than just sign them as FA then pay picks for them like Pitlick and Lazar. Point being you have a minor league team and players you draft they should get their shot.
The AHL team isn't always equipped with NHL ready players at those positions. You don't want top prospects in those roles, and you may not have that next Lomberg up and ready to go.
Free depth if they're beaten out by said AHLers anyway.
And it doesn't even cost them cap space if their salaries are $1.125M or less.
Who's responsible for pro scouting depth players? Last season they wasted a 4th round pick for 25 games of Pitlick and this offseason they give this guy a 2 year, $2.6 million contract despite poor advanced stats. Self inflicted wounds.
Carpenter for a 4th at the deadline and I would argue Jarnkok as well were misses
That's two 4th round picks, a 2nd and a 3rd for basically no production
It starts to add up
Carpenter was a 5th rounder not a 4th. Jarnkrok seemed like a good deal at the time. Cheap contract, could play center or wing, right shot. He wasn’t the ideal third line center that’s for sure.
After Rooney signed, he mentioned that the Flames offered him a contract a few years ago, but having just been in New Jersey and getting another offer in neighbouring New York, he chose New York. That original attempt to bring him in would have predated Sutter.

Some here seem to think that these UFA players will just take whatever deal we want to give them too. Negotiations don't work that way and if another team is interested the Flames may have to pay a bit more to get a player they think will work for them.

Thanks for the info.
He hasn't fit in with the system and in all honesty I hope he gets picked up by another team. Not just for the cap savings but to also give him the chance to play. He is an NHLer just not in our system.
happy we didn't sign 31 year old Jarnkrok for 4 years
Yeah, I was looking at the Leafs on CapFriendly yesterday and did a double-take when I saw he was signed for 4 years. Rielly is the only player they have signed for longer.

Yeah, I imagine Tre is going to do something about this.
The Rangers have the cap space even without a move. If they demoted a league minimum guy (like Carpenter who is already on waivers) and added Rooney, they would not be adding anything substantial.
I doubt they make a claim though.
