I never in a million years thought he would get another deal after the current monstrosity of a deal, yet here we are.
I love Looch, but it better just be evergreen 1 year deals until club and player want it to end.

He will get a 1 year deal for about $1M at most if he were to hit UFA, thinking he could get 3 years is hilarious when you have guys who could still produce on PTOs or taking league minimum deals.

Did you think Gudbranson could get 4x4?

I'm not sure how 35+ contracts work.
If they gave him a 3 year x $1M contract without any move protection, couldn't they just send him to the minors, avoid his cap, but still pay the big guy his money as a wind down? Anything under $1.225M this year can be moved to the AHL without a cap penalty.
Or is that blocked for the 35+ group?

Gudbranson was 30.
Lucic will be 35
Look at guys like Statsny, and Perry and the contracts they’ve been taking.
If Lucic wants 3 years you let him walk and laugh at whoever gives it to him.

I love Lucic but I have faith that Trelving won't entertain what a lot of posters are suggesting they'd be okay with in this thread.

You didn't answer my question...I never said I would give it to him either. I think people would be surprised what Lucic could get in the open market though.

If the 35+ contract is over 2 years, and it is either front loaded or has bonuses outside of the first year it can't be buried. You will only get $100k of cap space if that player is assigned to the minors.
What a 35+ contract really gives you is the option to give bonuses that will allow you to exceed the cap by that amount.

The value that Lucic brings largely goes unnoticed because of what doesn't happen when he's dressed. Hard to put a value on that.
Also hard to put a value on the leadership qualities he brings to the locker room. He's played 1100games, won a cup, has had multiple deep runs in the playoffs and is extremely respected across the league. Having that kind of presence in the locker room, especially with a coach like Sutter is invaluable to the team.
As long as he's in the 750k AAV range, I don't really see a downside.

I'be on board with a 1 year $1.5M deal or a 2 year $2M ($1M AAV) deal.

I'm pro-appropriately priced Milan Lucic.
I'm also pro-appropriately priced Brett "Superstar"/"Fun sized Blake Coleman" Ritchie.

Fair but a Lucic contract is just basically above a tryout in terms of priorities IMO.
He will very much will fall into the nice to have category truthfully and I can't imagine the world will be beating down his door to sign him.
Next year if he really wants to stay, look at Michael Stone as a blueprint contractually in terms of how the Flames should approach this.

I thought he could probably get 3 years at $2-3M so he got 1 more year and about $1.5M more than I thought he would.
In the end though I'm not basing it on what I think - I'm basing it on NHL contract trends.
https://www.capfriendly.com/browse/35-plus
Ovechkin, Malkin, Letang, Suter are the only 35+ contracts active that were for 3+ years.
Guys like Pavelski, Krejci, Bergeron, Statsny, Perry, Parise are all taking one year contracts.
I guess somebody could offer him like 3 years at $1.2M or something but to me he's reached that 1 year contract stage of his career.

If Bergeron is taking a 1-year deal, Lucic should me paid by the hour.

most or all of these guys could have gotten multi year deals...they wanted specific teams
I never said give him a 3 year deal, just that he could probably get better than people think on the open market. 1-2 years around league min is what I would personally do
Flames would have given Bergeron a 4 or 5 year deal if we are being honest, other teams would have done the same

100% he should be at the 1 year stage....I'd also add he should be basically at league min salary and I mean that with no disrespect.

A two year deal in the neighborhood of $1.5AAV would be a good deal for the Flames. I can't see much of a justification from either camp for whole lot more but there isn't much harm coming from something like that.

Gudbranson was 5 years younger coming off a career year I think everyone thought he would get a bad deal in free agency and that's exactly what happened.
I don't think anyone thinks Lucic is getting multiyear offers, but who knows it's the NHL GM's have a hard time controlling themselves in free agency.
