But if you kick the can down the road, you face the same issue, but with even worse consequences. If you wait until Jan to paly him, and he does poorly, there is then no more games until a potential playoff matchup.
Also, this attitude of worrying about the consequences if he plays poorly, is a loser mentality. The best players relish the chance to succeed. Give it to him.
Finally, to EE's comment, if there is an issue with Markstrom and the Oilers, the time to work on it is Oct.
Markstrom should, and almost certainly will, get the start.

Okay, so it is Markstrom. Good. And Skinner. Interesting.
Even though it's October, it's a pretty pivotal game. An Oiler regulation win and they are 6-3 while the Flames are 5-2. A Flames win and it's 6-1 vs 5-4.
As for the goalies... a Markstrom win and he has answered the questions. Meanwhile, both Campbell and Skinner would already have lost to the Flames. Conversely, a Markstrom loss adds fuel to the fire, and the Oilers would feel they might have the answer with Skinner.
Pretty big game for October.

Good lord, no. Markstrom is a professional athlete—one of the best at his position playing at the highest possible level. Nothing from this game is going to "hang over him for months."
And there is no gamble, here either. He is the Flames's undisputed starting goalie, and there is NO DOUBT AT ALL who will be starting that first playoff game v. the Oilers, if it even happens.
Plain and simply: it is Markstrom's net, and he needs to own it. The only way to do that is to play him with no hint of hesitation.

Flames vs Refs tonight is my guess. League will be looking for an Oilers win both for the standings and the intensified 3rd game later in the year.
Unless the Flames can score about 10 tonight I'm thinking it's gonna be a tough one. Defense has not looked real organized on transitional stuff for a few games and that's the Oilers' entire attack.
