I know that no GM is going to do the Flames a favour but is there a deal to be made somehow involving a couple of these guys, to avoid the waiver wire?
Mackey and Valimaki remind me of Kulak and Stralman - good serviceable players that were surplus but had decent careers after leaving.
Maybe there is a team down the waiver pecking order that could use a player like these guys.

I will be supremely disappointed if Mackey is waived. Flames have done a good job of letting him bake on the farm, but he is 100% ready to make the jump imo. Funny enough Mackey's play reminds me of Weegar.
Valimaki... I really thought that guy was going to be our next #1 dman. When him and Andersson broke into the NHL together, he looked like the better player. Injuries really sewered him but I think there is a big mental aspect too. Feel like he is constantly trying to do more than he needs to and gets caught looking like a fish out of water.
Even looking at that Neal goal vs the Avs that Vali made happen (posted earlier)... kinda seems like he tries to make those type of plays 1 or 2 times a game and usually gets burnt (missing the check etc). He just needs to simplify. A full season in the AHL might be good for him if he has a good attitude about it. That Wranglers team will be a great spot to develop with the quality of players and coaching staff.
Also lets not forget, the guy is 23 years old. Dman can take longer to develop. Mackey is 26. Weegar didn't come into his own until probably 2020/2021 when he was... 26/27.

Mackey has become the new #6 in my mind. Not even close in how the bubble players are playing.
Valimaki was a mess last night, but Stone was pretty rough too. It was more on Stone than Valimaki on the short handed goal. Literally had no one covered.
Keep him around as the 7-8 guy (I think he's 8) but he's not in the six.

On Milano - the fact that he's on a PTO should tell you everything you need to know. Perhaps he had some sub 1M offers and is hoping to increase that via PTO, but it doesn't seem like a good plan.
Classic top-6 or bust guy. Pretty weak forward group in ANA last year so I don't even know how much to take away from his 0.5 ppg season.

What about Vali has been good or serviceable lately? He is the worst D in camp

The farm is not important at the moment, we are trying to win in the NHL not the AHL.

The thing about it is, that is precisely the package we gave up for Toffoli to begin with, in the trade with Montreal last year.
Note - it appears Emil is doing well in his camp and the Habs are definitely happy with his progression so far. TSN did a spotlight on him as well.

I certainly disagree with this.
I think, at this stage, we're just piling in.
He hasn't earned a spot on the team...although I think he's right there with Stone.
Hanifin - Andersson
Zadarov - Weegar
Kylington - Tanev
Mackey
Stone, Valimaki, or Meloche - it doesn't matter much in my eyes.
I think Valimaki needs a mercy trade. He's broken here, and the Flames staff don't seem to be the right mix for helping him find whatever it was he lost (not the staff's fault)

He’s probably 8 or 9 on the depth chart now.

I hope Toffoli has a couple more levels cause I’m not impressed and I know, vets and all but he’s been pretty meh.

I have Meloche as the favourite for the #6 spot right now with Mackey as the 7. I think if Mackey was a RS you could flip them.

Weird. I have thought that Meloche has been excellent. Easily on par with Mackey, and easily on the opening night roster. But I do agree about Stone and Valimaki.

So, if you know how this works, then why even comment about something that is—at this stage—completely meaningless?

Probably depends on the pairs and whether they leave Weegar with Zadorov or put him with Tanev.
I don't know what you do with Valimaki. Recovery could of been hampered due to covid, but he seemed ok playing overseas during his recovery.

Define dangerous. I'm seeing perimeter play and I haven't seen any finish

Well nobody's showing any finish. But I disagree about perimeter play. I think he's been driving the net very effectively and creating a lot of scoring chances for himself and his linemates.

Mackey is steady as it comes to making it in the NHL. Valimaki should be traded if possible. He's not going to make the Flames club any time soon. He might be ready for another team that's on the rebuild.

Stone didn't cover Draisaitl, but Valimaki lost THREE battles with Yamamoto, then left him free to make the pass to Draisaitl. Valimaki was so bad on that play, they would have been better off if he simply weren't there.
No question that Mackey has passed both he and Stone. I would expect that Mackey starts the season in the lineup, with Stone as the #7

As far as I can tell, Sutters okay with Zary and Klapka. Haven't heard much of anything about the rest of the potentials
