So you're saying we should build a carbon copy of the Saddledome again?

That's the aggravating thing. everyone would be in a better state if it had been settled years ago, as it should have been.
Ego and incompetence got in the way. On both sides.

I'm probably not in the camp that both sides have bungled it, but that's really a different debate.
I guess costs always go up, but presumably a newer building means you delay the next new building that future generations get to pay for. I still have a hard time seeing the quantifiable differences between cities that have funded a new building and those that haven't. I'm sure people that really study such things maybe have an idea.

I just don’t like the look of the dome anymore. Looks dated, and we deserve better bathrooms.

It's crazy to me that they keep delaying this project due to costs, when costs are only going up and will continue to go up.

Alberta is a province that prides itself on hard work, self-reliance and individual responsibility.
These are all fine attributes, and often people idealize them in relation to people. But they should also be applied to company's. It's no wonder that a place that prioritizes these qualities is struggling in carrying out a system of "corporate-welfare" so the CSEC can have a new arena.
I'm not saying the city shouldn't assist, I'm just suggesting that its not surprising that this is such a controversial thing in Calgary.

I bet the Coyotes will be playing in a brand new NHL sized building before the Flames do.
This has been going on for my sons entire life, albeit he's only 13, but still, his whole life

Sept. 2, 2009: The Flames say they’ve been in contact with construction and architectural firms on moving ahead on a new arena and notes that the club wants to break ground on the new facility “as soon as we can,” says president Ken King.

Getting the Olympics would have absolutely helped with McMahon and other facilities like the Oval, etc. The amount of investment coming from provincial, federal, IOC and private funding was a once in a lifetime opportunity to fix our facilities - approx. $5 additional for every $1 the city invested... once in a lifetime opportunity to have other parties help pay for our crappy sports infrastructure. But I digress.

Yup, the Olympics would have been the perfect opportunity to get a busload of federal funding, something Calgary won't otherwise see.

However, a senior official who is familiar with the reports and the Saddledome told CBC News that there are no concerns about the stability of the roof or for public safety.
The official said a full remediation plan to stabilize the concrete is expected in coming months and a plan to fix the problem will be implemented.

So, uh...nothing to worry about. This place is wild.

Yeah but I would think that infrastructure projects including sports and cultural should be a priority for the Federal and Provincial governments. Look at how much money goes missing and unaccounted for. There was the Keystone Pipeline here in AB and all that money around federal minister Mckenna just as a couple examples. People get up in arms about tax payers money and rightfully so but you could make long lists about missing money spent with nothing to show.
Also, what better way to shift to a green economy then with infrastructure projects that create jobs and are beneficial to tourism as an example.

Maybe if they want better facilities they can use some of that new advertising money they are hauling in from on ice digital ads, gambling ads, helmet ads, and jersey ads. The fan experience keeps getting worse and more expensive, yet somehow we should also fork over tax dollars? There is a problem with the math in that one. My sympathy meter is sitting at zero here.

Its got an iconic look, no question, but perhaps a giant 'scoop-shaped' roof in an environment that gets a lot of snow was not the wisest of decisions?

Soon we'll have the buckets on seats catching leaking water like the Oilers pulled. Gotta ratchet up that pressure! Let the billionaire owners pay for it if they're embarrassed. My life goes on.

I must have imagined the whole Nenshi vs King ego thing wasting years of productive negotiations. The funny thing is that Nenshi went from the mayor that didn't want a funded arena under his watch to a mayor that wanted it as part of his legacy. I'm sure it's all CESC's fault that the city can't get a fieldhouse built as well right? The fieldhouse plans date back decades now. Sports facilities matter just as much as stuff like libraries but you wouldn't know it by the current state in this city.

Fork over tax dollars for the honor of an instant 25-40% increase on ticket prices. And people clamor for this ####, it's bizarre.

Yes, I'm sure you, Erick Estrada, remember the tenure of Nenshi and his actions in regards to the arena with clear vision, in no way biased by your long demonstrated desire to have the city pay for this.
