Sprong has never made more than 750k a year. Bringing him in on a PTO would be a good move for sure. No risk

I think there needs to be some levity on what Rodrigues is. His last 3 seasons (27, 28, 29yr old) of production 0.4 pts/g match Dube's (22, 23, 24yr old). This includes a career year for Rodrigues as a 29yr old. Exclude last year's production and his previous 3yr production of 0.34 pts/g is closer to Lucic's 0.31pts/g.
Really like his play style, speed and GAF meter but historically he is a 30pt/yr player with a career high of 43pt/yr. If that is what we are signing him to be then fine but I'd far sooner see what we have internally to fill that role for cheap, then pay for a 30pt/yr player coming off a career year.
If you can't find anything internally that works, these types of players can be found easily at the deadline.

I think the deal has to be 1-year.
Another perspective, Dom Luszczyszyn and Shayna Goldman at The Athletic have their player cards. They had Rodrigues as a 1.2 at the end of last season. At the same time, Backlund and Coleman were a 1.5, Dube was a 0.7, and Jarnkrok was a 0.5. So, Dom’s and Shayna’s cards say that Rodrigues is not as good as Coleman and Backlund but is significantly better than Dube and Jarnkrok. This means Rodrigues could upgrade Calgary’s top-9, and he could do that without the Flames having to pay any future and probably for a very reasonable contract.
Before you mock these cards as being simplistic, read these if you have access: https://theathletic.com/3050949/2022...shared_article and https://theathletic.com/1019070/2019...shared_article.

If setting the lineup according to an 'earned, not given' ethos, it's gotta be Mangiapanne on the top line now.
I doubt we see them putting one of the kids on the top line until it can be fairly said that they've earned it.

Also Schwindt. Calgary is high on him, Florida apparently really liked him. Someone mentioned that Burke and the Pittsburgh organization is high on him.
Schwindt, Ruzicka, Pelletier - that's 3 shots at the 3rd line beside 2 of Calgary's most defensively responsible players to enter the league with, while accumulating cap space. I would rather have that then sign Rodrigues. Sproung at near minimum salary (which is what he got last year in Seattle) is fine with me too, but 'attitude problems' seemed to the word around him since the draft, and he hasn't managed to stick anywhere.

Schwindt also got into 3 games on a pretty stacked Florida team, so he is probably really close to getting his shot in the NHL. Going by what people say about him, he sounds like he is suitable to break into the NHL in the bottom 6, which helps as well. His ceiling might not be as high as some prospects, but he isn't a top 6 or bust prospect either.

You know who would look really good at 4 x 2.1 right now???
No way that Tre could have done that at the time with having to get Tkachuk, huberdeau, kadri, Monahan sorted first...but...

We're in a cap squeeze for 2023-24, I'm glad we didn't give Jarnkrok that contract
If Rodrigues wants more than 1 year, we're probably better off leaving that spot open

I would rather wait...always some decent players that teams try to sneak through waivers...cap space and a 3rd line roster spot makes us flexible.

He is an RFA, and I assume he will be signed shortly. Can't see him holding out without much leverage to speak of.

I was really hoping for Kessel but since he's gone I'm good with waiting and banking the cap space. Just don't see Rodrigues being that much of an upgrade on guys wealready have.

I will get shot into this sun for this suggestion...
Valimaki for Nick Ritchie. Calgary lost some size and toughness last season with both Gudbranson and his brother Brett Ritchie leaving. Nick did score 10 goals in 24 games with Arizona, and he has an expiring contract @ 2.5 million. I am ok with taking a chance on him. Not sure if Arizona would do that, though they save 1.3 million dollars (Nick has a cap hit of 2.5 million, but is being paid 3.3, while Valimaki has a cap hit of 1.55, but is being paid 2).

Actually I really like this idea. First, this would work cap wise. Also he'd be a player Sutter would likely do well with (and Sutter seemed to really like his brother).
And Valimaki wouldn't have to clear waivers for the Flames, where they'd likely lose him.
I suppose a downside is that Ritchie is a LHS.

Sutter found a way to use Dustin Penner and Dwight King correctly, he could probably get something out of Nick Ritchie

Toronto had to give up a 2nd to get rid of Nick Ritchie. Not really sure if that's guy I want to take a flier on. He's not going to get playing time with Nick Schmaltz here.

I guess I still think that the ideal target is Vitali Kravtsov. Haven't heard much about him in terms of rumors though.

The general narrative is that NYR intends to give him every opportunity to earn a spot in the top 6.
I wonder if it's basically a competition between him and Kakko.
