False. I believe Manon Rhéaume played at least a game in the NHL. But, as already noted, the game already features female players and leagues.
Manon Rhéaume never played in the NHL. She played one game in the QMJHL, five in the IHL (including a game in '08-09 where she played one minute and racked up a 50.00 GAA), nine in the ECHL, and 11 in the WCHL.

Game has had international women's teams for a decade or so now...she is in the game. There are also tons of men in the game that don't play in the NHL
It's the palm trees that make the game look like a 90s hockey game
I'd say the greatest hockey game ever made was NHL '94. Tons of fun stuff from '95 to '05, but '94 is still the king IMO.
I would actually love it if someone took some of these older games and modded them with roster and team updates to make a 2022-2023 game. NHL 97 on Playstation was my jam back in the day. I also liked 2004 and 2005.

Their choice of cover athletes seems to have been pretty effective at generating conversation around the content of their game. As someone who doesn't play their games, I had no idea they had so many leagues included until this thread.

Its about sales, profit and keeping customers happy and returning, not conversations.
Its no secret the EA NHL games have been selling worse and worse since the high point of NHL 2015. If the conversation around the cover here doesnt do something to increase sales (and it wont), the franchise is still on a profit/relevance direction straight into the ground where a small group of "whales" and corporate interests and contracts keep the franchise barely afloat financially.
Similarly, Disney Star Wars has created plenty of conversation through their creative choices over the past decade and have seen the brand tank in terms of viewership, fan interest, merchandising and most importantly profit over that time of heavy "discussion". We have seen the exact same thing in terms of sales/interest tanking while creating conversations with Dr Who, Star Trek, DC & Marvel Comics (comic book divisions) and it appears we are about to see it with Lord of the Rings and a number of other video game/movie/TV franchises (The Star Wars & MCU TV shows on Disney+ do far lower viewership than most likely think they do... She Hulk ep1 did a little more than 1/10 of the viewership of House of the Dragon ep1 and similar viewership numbers to CW Batwoman and Supergirl, which are now both cancelled). More people will watch a new, single PewDiePie or Mr Beast video today alone on youtube than will watch Disneys Lightyear over the course of its run. MCU phase 4 is making less than half the box office that Phase 2 or 3 made and DC movies are almost a non-factor after their longtime comic book fans largely abandoned them. Check out the new Saints Row game that bombed this week while going down a similar path and GTA6 could be next with its focus on "being more socially responsible".
Sorry for the rant, but I guess Im just saying that, over the past 5-10 years, "discussion" in the entertainment sphere often translates into massively decreased profit and relevance once your attempted discussion is over. We are watching titans fall every day in the entertainment sphere right now. Be careful of how many long time, returning wallets you are willing to lose, whether you agree with their reasons or not.

Yeah, as far as promotions go it succeeded in making me more aware of their product than I would have been, but I'm not buying. Maybe someone else will after becoming aware, but by the sounds of it the market just isn't that interested in this type of product anymore. If their core consumer base is losing interest and no longer buying well before these conversations, the problems run deeper than who they put on the cover. Is there data to draw conclusions about causal relationships between these conversations and the decline in profitability, rather than them just being correlated? Perhaps it's just something about older content franchises on certain distribution models.

Meanwhile, the 3 white spidermen movie is cruising to $2B as Top Gun screams past $1B. I think the success of the first wonder women movie made them think this was a much deeper well than it was. Rings of Power is struggling to produce any positive fanfare and with a multibillion price tag, is positioning itself to be the financial disaster thats going to pivot Hollwood away from ham-fisting this type of content into all their premier material.
