Norm!

The bottom line is they were lucky to have Keith, he was their best defenseman in the playoffs and it wasn't close at all.
Him leaving left a big hole in their defense that they can't fill.
As for Smith, I can see if the NHL doctors start asking serious questions that the Oilers will have to do something.
NSFW- Warning may be upsetting to people with weak stomachs

It's an interesting thing to consider - He's a pretty good poop disturber.

I decided to look it up and capfriendly says RFA with arbirtation rights. I thought he might've been UFA since he is the same age and draft year as Tkachuk, and he did make his pro debut in the same season. But it appears his time in the minors and europe prevented him from getting to the pro seasons played threshold for UFA.

If I was the kind of person to wear sweatpants and pee in a sink, my biggest fear would be ol' stinkeye's ego deciding in mid-November that he would be better than Campbell and Skinner and just announces that he is fit to play. Kind of hard to look the other way on cap circumvention when the guy everyone agrees is too hurt to play stops playing along.

As soon as Campbell has an injury, Smith will miraculously be healthy. That would actually be really interesting to see go down, I don’t think Smith would want to give up the net after that.

Yep, the league really needs to look in to that. He seemed to be healthy through the entire playoffs.

Also I feel like Smith is the kind of guy who will want to play if he can. So he probably would not be happy with some manufactured LTIR that keeps him from playing what potentially might be the final season of his career. I wonder if the NHLPA would intervene on behalf of a player if a club tries to unduly categorise him as injured.

The NHL already let Hossa go on LTIR with a rash.
Seems like the bar of being unable to play has been set very, very low.

Hossa's 'rash' was actually pretty gnarly: https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/comm...ne_specialist/
On the onset of the skin condition:
"It’s weird, I never had such problems before. It began 4 years before my last season and it kept intensifying each year. I started noticing patches of irritated skin, especially in places where gear wraps up around the body like elbow pads etc…It started itching and later became so unbearable that I was scratching it till it was bloody. My wife was grabbing my hands…I couldn’t sleep in short sleeves since my bed was all bloody and my wife had to wash sheets constantly. Then the doctors gave me the meds which I took to keep playing during my last year.”
Pick a different bar.

What's he going to say?
"I never had any intention of playing after my base salary dropped to $1 million per season"
Those super long term contracts all turned out exactly as predicted the day they were signed. Pretty crazy.

“One specialist told me I was allergic to dark clothes. So I started wearing all white clothes under the gear. Everyone else wore dark, team colours except me. So I was the “white ghost” and everyone laughed the first time I walked in the locker room.”

I didn't listen to this but that quote is kind of funny considering he's doing that interview in a black shirt and pants.

The bar isn't that low if you are at all interested in studying the actual facts.
