You need elite talent. Huberdeau extended would be my #1 priority.
You can be a little more wait and see with Weegar and see how it goes under Sutter.

While that would've been awesome, it also likely means they would've had to pay to dump a bad contract and probably move Mangiapane as well.

Man, Pinder always going on about sign and trades and how they never happen, then the first one ever does go down and it's in his market and he isn't on the air any more to talk about it. Poor guy.

I actually thought about this today — if that were the case I think you’d be more willing (?) to start the season with Huberdeau not re-signed yet. Let it play out and hopefully if things go well Huberdeau will extend, otherwise have the difficult conversation of trading him vs going all in again.
But without Johnny, and facing the real prospect of a rebuild, you can’t start the season with an expiring asset like Huberdeau. Either he’s in or he’s out, Treliving doesn’t have the luxury of waiting this time IMO.

That was my hope after the playoffs. We were never going to win a cup with Tkachuk at $8+ mil.

Gotta figure Huberdeau is going to want at least 9M, if the team is still trying to win you pretty much have to pay it.
No idea what Weegar is worth.
If they can't sign either of them I hope they do a trade right away to maximize value.
|
Just remember, the Flames were prepared to give Guadreau $10.5 x 8, and they weren't worry about him being 29.

If he's definitively out then I'd flip him before the season.
I don't think that's the case though.

MacKenzie Weegar comparables? Jacob Slavin and Jake Muzzin? $5.3-$5.625? Six years, $33.5M, for a cap hit of $5.584? Huberdeau comparisons? Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk? $9.5M? 8 years, $76M, for that $9.5M cap hit?

Huberdeau changed his profile pic on his Instagram account to a pic of him wearing a Flames uni. So there’s that….

While it's true that Sutter will help him shore up his game, something like a 7x7 contract would be a big gamble.

Ekblad CF% 58.8 CF% rel 3.4
Weegar CF% 58.3 CF% rel 2.5
And Weegar was without Ekblad for 21 games and Ekblad was only without Weegar for 2.
And Weegar was even better in the playoffs.
CF% 62.3 CF% rel 8.1 (#1 among d-men)
Agree that giving a long term deal to a 29 year old is a gamble. But we're here. And we were about to give a similarly aged 5'6" guy an 8 year deal.

IMO, Weegar reminds me a lot of Gio in his prime. I would guess he’ll get 6.5M per. Huberdeau I think gets 10.5.

It's really hard to see either guy wanting to hit the ice without an extension. I think all parties could be up front that $$ certainty simply making sense for all sides, with the understanding that either side may wish to initiate a trade at some point.
I don't think a FMV extension significantly impacts either guy's trade value at the upcoming TDL. Even if an acquiring team knows they can't really afford the player the following season it wouldn't be hard to flip them cheaply in the off-season (see Bjorkstrand).
It's much harder to say what their trade values will look like [with extension in place] next summer or beyond, but you'd have to factor the service given to the Flames in the meantime to any depreciation in trade return.
