Would you rather have JG , MT and Monahan all locked in for 2 more years or
All gone after next year ?

It’s realistic scenario all three are gone . One which is a good thing and two that aren’t .

That’s the gamble Ottawa is taking

I think it’s easier to get rid or deal with a overpaid Monahan then trying to find elite talent . It’s not like you go to the store and just buy elite talent if you have cap room . Elite talent is seldom available

In 66 games, including 35 goals. That's a 43 goal, 68 point pace.

Before Batherson went down, that line was truly rocking.

Ottawa obviously believes he's the real deal.

35 goals and not even a point per game doesn't usually get you almost $8 million AAV on a long term deal.
Helps a guy like Mangiapane out a lot who had very comparable stats. Good luck getting him signed to anything under 6M now.

Mangiapane had the same points in a lot more games, as a lot more mature player. He still has upside but he's 26. His ceiling is a lot closer than Norris. Also, Norris is a centre, and their best one at that.

Ya Mangiapane got 55 points in 82 games.

Norris was on pace for 68 points in 82 games.

If Mang got the same dollars per point over 82 games he would have a 8 year deal at 6.43 million. I suspect he is lower both in dollar terms and in number of years.

It's got it's charm but overall it's not a a great city . Industrial looking low options for night life, chain shops rule with little diversity for shops... etc etc . . I've lived on on off half my life between Calgary and other towns and Calgary v kamloops was more access to chain stores . There's IMO little going on in Calgary for local growth. Columbus ( I've been there) goes have innovative growth albeit smaller.
Ranked #3 in the world but not a great city. Ya ok...

I love this approach by Ottawa.
They're being honest with themselves about the market they have and getting long term contracts on their young core.

Even if one or two of those guys end up being overpaid in time, 2-3 could end of absolute steals.
At least they're in control of these guys through their prime years and not going to get Gaudreau'd.

I think Calgary is the greatest place on earth, but I grew up in the Maritimes, so what do I know?

Americans can have differing views on this.

But I put that on them, not us.

They are doing the opposite of Calgary, signing key young guys to the 8 year terms, way more cost control for future years. Imagine if the Flames had signed Johnny for 8 instead of 6. Now I do remember hearing that the Flames had an 8x8 deal on the table last time so its quite possible Johnny was never willing to commit much past the earliest UFA period possible.

Totally different roles though to be fair

Thats the risk. The fact is the Johnny had 2 great seasons out of 8, those really seem to be outliers and is less than a pt/game player without this last season. I think he will lucky to be 80+ pts in Columbus, not even sure who will be his centre.. cause it wont be Lindholm quality

He's young yet. He could learn a different position.
