Good trade for both teams. Ottawa adds another good player to a core that is coming together. They still need more, but they added one today.
Hawks need to rebuild, so...

This is a great deal for a team that doesn't really need another high but not really high draft pick that might help in 2-3 years. Debrincat will pair nicely with Tkachuk, Stutzle, Norris and Batherson upfront.
Love this deal from the standpoint of they were probably not going to get anything as good as the player they just got with the first rounder and it helps them right away.

If you look at the standings from this year, they improved the team directly in front of them. Below them New Jersey will have Hugheseses full season plus the 2nd (or whatever they get for him) along with Hischier, Bratt and friends expecting to improve as early 20 year olds. They should leap frog a team like the Hawks-Debrincat.
Flyers will have Couturier likely back, probably Ellis, maybe a certain high priced UFA. Giroux is gone, but still likely expecting to be better then they were especially if Farabee and friends progress.
Canadiens get the 1st overall, Dadonov, and pressure by the team to compete so likely will be looking at UFAs or trades to improve now and who knows what happens with Price.
So Chicago is likely banking on "fighting" with the likes of the Yotes and Kraken for those bottom spots. Of course any team can surprise (good or bad) but I think the Hawks are happy to gamble for Bedard.

It would be hilarious if they have a way better year next year.

When you compare what Chicago gave up for Jones vs what they got for Debrincat it’s horrible
But if Debrincat wasn’t signing this off season it’s better to move him now. Would hate to get nothing for him. What team does that?

If the Sens don’t resign Debrincat or flip him then not sure why they do this?
Typically you should talk to player and they resign like Fiala did right away. If nothing gets reported today this is a stupid risk for a decent looking young team

So it's looking like the Hawks trade Hagel for firsts, trade DeBrincat for a first+, don't sign Strome. Those players, along with Kane and Jones, formed their top 5 point producers last season.
If the Hawks start contending in 5 years or so off the back of Bedard and friends because they suck for the next season or two, people will bring up how they traded a 1st for Jones so they didn't tear it down. But they clearly are making a conscious choice to "tank" and rebuild.
Just like the Avalanche and Lightning did.

I wouldn't really call Debrincat part of the tank job. That was pure contract dispute. Debrincat would normally be the leading edge of the rebuild.

He wouldn't even be able to sign a contract yet...they still have a year on this contract and a year of RFA after that.

Why is this situtaion any different than Tkachuk? Or Gaudreau last year?
Chicago pulls the trigger and gets more now and potentially a big gain in who they draft in 2023 as well

So where does that put the Tkachuk trade market?
To Jersey: Tkachuk
To Calgary: 2nd overall, unprotected 1st in 23, Holtz?
Possibly add a sweetener on our end.

Flames would absolutely have to add to that imo.

Picks in this draft seem to be available cheap but that 2023 would be a lottery protected pick. Doubt we get 2 firsts either

They finished 23rd, 21st and 27th in the last 3 years. They already suck so tanking isn’t a decision that they had to make.
