But not on the same goals.
Fiala only started playing the PP at the end of the season.

He also is only 50% as good as Fiala. Actually, maybe only 25%, 50% was pretty generous.
I’d rather have Fiala at that cap than Toffoli at his cap.
Toffoli sucks. Everyone is in denial and needs to stop trying to convince themselves by pointing out details such as “he still has 2 more years in his contract so it was worth it!”, “his cap is low compared to others so it was worth it!”
Y’all, he ####ing sucks. Just admit it and let it be. It’ll sting less that way than denial. One of the worst, streakiest players I have ever seen and somehow, someway, for some incredibly strange reason he’s through of as a “pure goal scorer” like he snipes 40 on the regular, dude can’t even hit 30 lmao. Terrible trade.

With a much shorter contract. Tofolli will be good next year.

Toffoli’s conditioning has been mentioned so we’ll see how he turns up this new season but I also wonder if he isn’t the type of player that all the games and hard miles have taken a toll on.

Also pick 19 v 26
And I would say Faber is a better prospect
In taking his glass half empty view that poster just often also ignores facts

Higher pick, second rounder who has promise, and taking on an 8 million cap hit.
Fair trade around.
I’d rather Tofolli at his cap hit and length over this.

Value wise the trade is as close as you can get
Toffoli was a mistake
And yeah Fiala makes more because he is better
And no, Toffoli is not a better value, contract or not

Trade value isn’t close. Faber typically ranks with or ahead Pelletier or Coronato. He’s as good as any prospect we have
Kings paid way more to get Fiala and sign him for double the cap
I do like Fiala though so it’s a good deal for the Kings but it does come at a pretty steep price

Flames gave up less for Toffoli, who is not as good of a player as Fiala.

By way of comparison, does anybody have a JFresh card for Toffoli? I'd like to have some data other than ‘Y'all, he ####ing sucks’.

With Tofolli I’m going to say give the guy a chance, but hell if it doesn’t feel like the exact same hoping for something I felt from Brower and Neal.

Toffoli will be better next year. Probably needed a nice offseason to recover from all the playoffs he's been in the last few years.

It's a simple timing thing. Fiala was not available before the TDL, Toffoli was.
Even if the Flames had not made the Toffoli trade, they could not have made this trade because those assets aren't as good and the Flames don't have the cap space.
Faber is from Minnesota and currently playing for U of Min. I don't know if he would have been a flight risk, but it might have been tough to crack the LAK lineup as they have lots of options at RHD:
Doughty
Durzi
Sean Walker - 27 yo with 2x2.65M remaining of his 4 year deal. Missed most of the year with a knee injury.
Jordan Spence (2019 4th rounder; played 24gp and 3 PO gp this year)
Helge Grans (picked 10 spots ahead of Faber in 2020, just played a season in AHL)
MIN probably can't afford Dumba beyond this year leaving Sprugeon and Addison (only 18 nhl gp so far) as the only other real RHD.

Some weird takes on Toffoli. When Sutter first got to Calgary, the first thing that he said was that the general conditioning of the team sucked. They worked on it over the summer, and everyone came back ready to play a more aggressive game. I expect Toffoli to come back next season and be on par physically with the rest of the team, and our impression of him as a player to improve.
He also plays on the PK, and is decent defensively, and Fiala is not. Fiala is great at what he does, but he wouldn't last a month on a Sutter led team.

I don't get this train of thought.
Sutter likes good hockey players and is good at maximizing what he can get out of good players.
That line stinks of "Gaudreau isn't a Sutter player" and we all saw how that played out.

28 goals in 52 games last season, 7th in the NHL
and then 14 points in 22 playoff games

and not available at the deadline...again apples and oranges
its like saying the Panthers shouldn't have traded for Giroux (they now have nothing) because they could have got Fiala in the summer for the same price
Fiala>Nothing
obviously
