Yup, because when frustrated, the guy that’s insulated himself for 26 years within the organization, edicts from above, through the GM first, and then directly to the coach, or in some cases, directly to the players too.

NHL coaches and GMs prefer to handle their own business, so when they start to get told what to do or whatever other undermining occurs from above, they usually eventually push back.

In Edmonton, that then gets the cue to get the state sponsored press starting their campaign to get the masses riled up. Renney found that out. Eakins found that out. Richards never had a chance. MacLellan found that out, so did Tippett. Woodcroft may not have the balls to push back and his lack of experience will make him a puppet of Lowe more so than the last two coaches.

My guess is that they think of replacing him next summer as the team doesn’t reach where they got this year (or even close) but they hold off…grudgingly…he makes it to November 2023, when the Oilers come out of the gate slow.

Holland lasts until next summer as he gets the blame for executing the decisions and requests from those above him…or the summer after that as Connor’s D day starts to loom. He will get blamed for the Nurse deal and everything else; Smith, Keith, Kassian etc during his smear campaign.

The fact that anyone thinks this is a bad idea is quite frankly hilarious.

I hate the oilers with the intensity of 1000 suns, but credit where credit is due. Woodcroft got results.

I hope he fails next season, but let's not be petty. This coach's lack of a system and riding the wonder twins embarassed our team in the playoffs.

Yeah sure, Woodcroft got results.

But he benefitted from:

the goalies stopped sucking
the team got healthy
they acquired Kane for almost free
new coach bounce

I am not saying it was all smoke and mirrors, but I do think it's fair to say that he hasn't really proven anything yet. So let's wait and see how this goes. My guess is things won't look quite so rosy, once they settle in to another season, looking pretty much exactly the same.

The Flames were their own worst enemy and yet despite that the series should've gone 6 with a chance to go 7 the way Smith was declining into the next series.

Not really much to see here. They had to sign the guy and he will likely regress next season as the Oilers come back to earth. I doubt he makes it past year 2 of this deal before they churn over the next coach.

Isn't that what the best coach all time would end up doing with that roster? There's nothing to coach. The best they can do is throw those guys out there for half the game and hope their individual talents can overcome the steaming pile of turd surrounding them. They may as well pay one of us to do it.

Whether they're without Kane or stuck with a replacement level 1B behind decrepit Mike Smith because they squeeze in Kane somehow, they'll be primed for a step back.

The roster was somewhat of a fluke anyways because they added Kane for an unusual price that only was going to happen in that unique situation.

Either way, Woodcroft's "genius" won't be able to stop the decline.

Over/under on regular season games until he's fired? Does he get one season or less?

Doesn't make POs or first round bounce, gets a month of the new season and still NG so fired? Solid scenario.

It's a little early to make any predictions seeing we don't know what their goaltending situation is going to be or if Kane returns. I would expect he's going to last all of next season for sure as I think the Oilers will be in the mix for a playoff spot. He's also likely tied to Holland who probably doesn't get a chance to hire another head coach.

That kicks in next season. Hard to believe he's going to make over $9.25 million for the next 8 seasons.

Knowing when to make the call to pull Smith after the 4th goal or waiting till after the 5th is when the Oiler’s great coaches earn their pay.

It has. They have $7M left to spend. And only 15 players under contract, including only one goalie. They can't get both a decent goalie and Kane. They have to choose one or the other, and maybe they can't get either. Kane wants all $7M.

If they talk Smith into retiring, they need 2 goalies, not one. If they talk Keith into retiring, their defence corps is Nurse, Barrie, Ceci, Bouchard and Borberg.

They will still be paying James Neal, Sekera and Lucic next year.
