aside from the first game of BOA, all of the other playoff games this round are pretty much what you expect in a playoff game with under 6 goals... (colorado's game yesterday had 3 EN)
Who is refereeing the game does make a big difference....
|
thats just it, the winner of this series could go on to play Colorado/st.louis and the series is called completely different.

Compared to what I should have felt.......yeah, kinda.
Might have been the low scoring games, might have been Oettinger standing on his head, might have been the endless Draft Kings talk, but in the end the result was great and an entertaining finish, obviously.
This BOA though....not sure what it is. It's game day today and I'm not overly excited or nervous or anything. I've kind of forgot the game was even being played a few times to be honest. Again, not sure what it is. Maybe it's the ongoing endless Draft King stuff, the endless McDavid talk (yes it is warranted for the most part but it's still over the top), the really inconsistent reffing, and a parade to the penalty box so it seems to kill any flow to the games.
Maybe it's just me, but I'm still waiting for this series to really get exciting for a full game, or even an extended time. If there's a zillion more penalties and PPs tonight mixed in with 4-on-4 play I'm guessing my interest in this series will wane even more. Hoping for a fun game to watch tonight.

Its just a product of getting older IMO.
Not saying you are old......(like Cheese old )....but still getting older.
I have no where near the feels like i had many years ago.
I go back to the cup winning season, and maybe even more so the 5 years previous to it, and i was consumed by the club and its fortunes. That just fades a bit over time though when real life starts to become more important because of various things. Kids, work, other forms of entertainment/whatever to eat up disposable dollars...etc.
Just my opinion and maybe I'm way off on that, but have had this convo with some of the guys i was running with back in those days and all feel the same way.
Its pretty cool to see the younger ones both on this site and around town still have that level of passion/fanaticism though.

I'm sitting here thinking similarly. With the media constantly gushing over McDavid, and how these games have been called I'm not really even looking forward to tonight. This is a dream matchup being ruined by the refs and media as far as I'm concerned. It almost feels like no matter what we do, we'll continue to get the #### end of the stick. I hope tonight is better, but I'm not holding out much hope.
That being said, I love this organization and team, and hope tonight is better. GFG!

I am watching the game with a bunch of Canucks fans tonight. It's not quite as bad as it sounds though and they are all pretty much quietly hoping for the Flames because of the Tanev and Markstrom connection, as well as being generally annoyed by the Oilers. It's funny how they are starting to see the light about the Oilers. The common theme I am hearing is that the refs are going to tilt the ice in favour of the Oilers and the Flames are the actual underdogs despite the betting odds. There are a couple who placed bets on the Oilers because of that though.

I have had issues with some of this as well, but it has been the media portrayal of the playoffs more so than the games. Now, I enjoy them more on mute and without SNet's input. The talking heads have really ruined the experience for me. The betting I just find very off-putting, so the mute helps.
I see this playoffs as an important thing for this franchise for a few reasons. First, it was to get over the hump in terms of the first round - that was important and accomplished. I also see it as important now for the franchise to sort out how they want to play against McDavid, who has owned the Flames for years now. This year the Flames have shown the ability to play against him tough and were mostly rewarded. As Sutter likes to say, they have a structure of how to play against the Oilers now, which is encouraging for now and the future.
This year was mostly a pleasant surprise to me. I expected them to be better but not so much better. I'm excited by a number of the new prospects on the farm this year and some from players that I didn't know until this year like Ruzicka. Now with a better structure and team game to work with the better drafting and prospect development, I do think that the team is starting to make good strides. Obviously, they have some big contracts for the off season but I'm growing more hopeful for this franchise than I have been in a long time.
To the more immediate, last game had 35 minutes of 5 on 5 time compared to 49 in game one, and the Flames were right there and could have won that game. That was a close to a penalty filled game as we will see and it was right there. Yet, the talking from even the Calgary media (at least when they are interviewing Darryl of what I read in the Athletic) suggest that they are going to lose the series the way it is going.

5 penalties in the Florida - Tampa game today. 7 penalties the game before.
Last two games in this series - 9 (not counting the end of the game in game one) and 20.
The refs are ruining this series.

I think it's natural.
As you get older you get more and more perspective in life. And as much as sports is fun, it isn't the same as the health of your kids, your career, beating cancer.
Doesn't mean you don't care. But the passion changes.

Yeah unfortunately you may be correct tranny. I can still get wound up and emotional during the games, but years ago on a day like today I'd be nervous as heck all day, pacing around the house, knots in my stomach.
Today I'm doing some chores around the house, sun is out, baseball game is on. Not exactly hockey weather, which may be adding to it for me.
As you know, the BOA back in the day was just a complete war. Every game. The series this year has more of a feeling of 'let's see what the refs do tonight to determine how the game goes, hope they are consistent' for me. Totally different vibe, just not the same at all.
Anyways.....I'm not trying to be a Debbie Downer. It's still Flames playoff hockey, life could be a lot worse. Hope to see the Flames play their best hockey and a great game tonight to get all fans on both sides riled up. And no I'm not Cheese old

I say 2004 since I am old.
I will be there in 2004 Iginla (Red) and my son will be trolling his Tkachuk retro (Red).
I've never been to Rogers place so any tips on parking or other veteran manouvers would be much appreciated!

Just looked at some numbers and I would love to ask the league:
Is it too much to ask for the NHL to be a little more consistent with their product?
St Louis and Colorado’s total number of powerplays per game reads as 4, 4, 5.
In contrast, the Oilers vs Flames reads as 7, 11. So in game 2, the total number of powerplays in one game almost matches another series that has played 3 games. It’s almost not even the same sport right now.
These refs are in the same league, get the same training, comparable experience levels and etc etc. Why the extreme discrepancy in powerplays from one series to another? I don’t want to call the league out for any conspiracy theories, but there has to be some favoritism here amirite? The Oilers want the game to be played at 5 on 4 or 4 vs 4 as much as possible. So the league is granting the Oilers’ and Sportsnet’s wishes because they want McDavid to move to the next round. It’s also pretty clear that Sportsnet has a clear directive to talk about McDavid like he’s a god.
Makes sense when you think about it. The new American TV deal has been completed, so the NHL is now focusing on bolstering the Canadian TV ratings by advancing McDavid as far as possible at the expense of everyone else. The league is corrupt as we’ve seen in the past, not much different from the NBA. So the Flames really will have to try to win against basically all odds here.

I think this is part of it. But also, for the first time in forever, the flames are the better team in these first two rounds. First time since 1994? Hard to get amped up when you expect to win.
So to me, the series doesn't feel real until the flames are behind in the series. Or until we get to game 5. I didn't even care about the Dallas series until Game 4.
How good was game 4-7 against Dallas vs game 1-3?

We normally park in the city centre parkade and it’s a very short walk. If you get there early there are a few restaurants and pubs along the way. Careful about the streets that you use to get into the parkade as they can be confusing.
I’ll wear my 2004 and essentially by myself as it’s business partners wearing oiler gear. Good luck to you both!

Maybe tonight we'll see a lot more 5-on-5 play with some big hits and great plays by both teams (well, one more than the other) to get me into this series more.
Just want to see the Flames play well tonight. They've had 2 games now that were far from their best. Just win.
btw, great job as usual Cheese
