I'm ok with it. He's a 2 pitch pitcher with past control issues who's over 30 and wants 6 years and Cy Young money. Good for him, he earned it but I'm ok if the Jays miss out.
Plus there are a crap load of pitchers available this off season.
|
Yup, he was great for the Jays this year, but there will be much better value available.
Semien would be great, but I imagine he wants to play short

Ray was on Tim & Friends and said he loved Toronto but him and his wife are enjoying talking to a lot of other teams. He said that as a player you wait six years for this.
After that I'm less confident than I was yesterday. If the Blue Jays can outbid everyone (which I don't think will happen) he'll re-sign but I don't think he's re-signing because he loves being a Jay and working with Pete Walker and wants to win a World Series in Toronto.

I find myself really hoping the Jays can pull a rabbit out of their hat and land Sherzer.
Obviously a super long shot, he'll probably stay with the Dodgers, but he'd be such a great fit. A true ace for 2-3 years and no long term commitment.

Don't forget the Jays get compensatory picks for Ray and Siemen if they sign elsewhere (Can be offset if we sign a FA though)
I think the Jays signing of Berrios after trading assets shows their philosophy.
Get picks, develop assets/draft, and use those assets for players under control who you can re-sign and not loose a draft pick
I would look for a trade for a SP with a year or 2 left and getting the 2 compensatory picks for Ray and Siemen leaving

A United States bookmaker is facing more than a $1 million loss on a bet that was placed in March and will be decided Thursday night.
On March 19, a bettor in Nevada placed a $30,000 bet on Shohei Ohtani to win the American League MVP award at 30-1 odds with a William Hill sportsbook. Ohtani is a finalist, along with Toronto Blue Jays stars Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Marcus Semien.
If Ohtani wins, the bettor will net $900,000, and William Hill will have suffered an overall seven-figure loss on an awards market that typically doesn't attract a ton of money.

Once he realized his bet was favoured heavily he’d cash out at a lower payoff to avoid the chance of an upset like Guerrero winning.

Agreed. He could have chosen his words better in my opinion. Seemed to be a guy who's REALLY enjoying free agency, and gave that response when asked what his message would be to Jays fans. Seemed odd.

I would have said something like "I loved my time Toronto and I'd like to come back but we'll see what happens". Fans aren't dumb and know he's talking to multiple teams but it wouldn't come off as suggesting you're just chasing the biggest payday even if you are.
When Price was entering free agency you could tell he wanted to come back and even said if they won the World Series he "would" be back and when Hazel interviewed him the next season you could sense the disappointment in his voice that he wasn't even offered a contract.

Harper with the NL MVP.
AND drumroll.......
Ohtani wins the AL unanimously.
Vladdy with 29 2nd place votes and 1 third place vote.
Salvador Perez gets the other 2nd place vote. Stupid Kansas City baseball writer. It's probably the neck bearded bro from the 2015 ALCS. No way Salvy deserves a second place vote lol.

So now it remains to be seen if now that Ohtani has one if becomes less impressive in future voting. What Vladdy did at his age should win almost every year going forward.

It is pretty hilarious that the Angels have zero playoff wins in the last eight years, but four MVP awards in that time.

Or even earlier in the season once more money started to move towards Ohtani. At least put some money on someone like Guerrero at that point.
Like the guy with the 17 game parlay a few weeks back. He hit the first 16 and needed a win on Monday night, which he didn’t get. Hopefully he closed out at least part of his position by then, either by accepting a lower layoff or betting on the other team.

No kidding. That tells you something about how to build a baseball team.

It's kind of why I'm starting to sour on Trout. I'm a long way away from calling him overrated, and never will, because he's unreal. But you start to wonder...Why is the team with the "best player in baseball" so bad so often? There are so many other factors in baseball but what Harper did this season is basically drag the Phillies into contention. The Angels haven't even had a whiff of the playoffs in years. I saw a stat the other day that they are the only team to finish under .500 in each of their last 6 seasons. So if Harper in an MVP season can drag a poor team to contention. Why isn't the "best player in baseball" doing that on a year to year basis??? Just makes you wonder...And why I love baseball so much. There is no method to the madness.

Philly won 5 more games then Anahiem this season with Trout out for basically the whole year
They were 2 games over .500
Harper didn’t drag them anywhere . They underperformed the last 2 years
One batter can’t make a team

Well colour me surprised. I didn’t know this was a thing. Not much of a gambler. I assume the wager would have to be significantly large (along with the likelihood of the house losing) for this to be an option?
