Of course Sutter isn't going to shower Kylington with praise and call him a top 4 D. He's not going to let any young player feel too good about themselves and get complacent, especially in pre-season.


As far Kylington-Gudbranson goes, weren't they a pairing on Monday? I thought Kylington showed he could play well with anyone, and Gudbrandson was quiet but solid.

Hard to use just a preseason to gauge effectiveness for pairs ... limited sample size, and varied lineups etc.

The Flames have four pairings above water.

Tanev - Kylington
Tanev - Zadorov
Hanifin - Andersson
Gudbranson - Mackey

When you see that it's not really a shock to see them going with Tanev - Zadorov and Hanifin - Andersson as a start.

The issue is the third pair, and the team's inability to clone Tanev.

Just back of break even though is Gudbranson and Kylington.

Both Valimaki - Stone and Valimaki - Gudbranson are further back.

It looks like he's already played 2 preseason games, so he must not be required to sit until he has served the 4th game.

I believe he promised to buy Connor mCavi a happy meal at the drive through, but then at the last minute he refused to pay for the happy meal, then blocked ppor Connor's drive through laine, causing poor mCavi to cry, so the league is suspended him from the preseason cup tournament.

I didn't really see what Sutter said as a criticism of Kylington. He was directly asked about the player and he talked about Kylington's progression. He brought up that he's pushing to be an everyday player. He's fit. He's not a top 4 but can play bottom pairing and bring mobility and play against good players, but he's got to watch the turnovers to stay in the role he's pushing for.

That is a correct and accurate assessment of Kylington's camp and where he is at going into the season.

As you said, the way the defense is built is ugly. That is likely the biggest reason Zadorov is playing with Tanev. (Zadorov and Tanev actually sound like a very mean shutdown pair when Big Z finds his rhythm. A little slow though.)

If Kylington or Valimaki can emerge as top 4 players this season it would go a long way in fixing some issues, but we aren't there yet. And it won't happen under Sutter until someone gets injured, or one of those players shows they are 100 ready for that role, which is how it should be IMO. Kylington keeps playing the way he has and he will get the first look.
