Exactly, the hype train up there gets old. They haven’t gotten significantly better, Mike Smith isn’t going to repeat last season, that defence core is probably the worst in the league, and they have a slight improvement in a forward group that works around the wonder twins playing 30 mins a night. If Mavi or Raisatl get injured they miss the playoffs. No contender teams have that same issue……
Complete joke.

They also had MA Fleury. Grubauer is a decent goalie, but I don't find that I have a lot of confidence in him carrying that team the way Fleury did in VGK.

The apparent weakness of the Vegas lineup was at forward - they had no one, outside of one winger (Neal) who had given any indication of being able to consistently put the puck in the net, and he was by no means a superstar. They also had a promising offensive player they got out of Florida who had previously given some good indications in Tampa of being an offensive threat (Marchessault). The Kraken are in a similar spot (Eberle and Gourde). Both teams also had a couple of guys who had yet to be put in a situation where they'd either sink or swim as major contributors - I think you could see guys like Jared McCann or Mason Appleton filling that role.
But who knows - maybe no one steps up.
|
The biggest separation between Seattle's and Vegas's NHL entrances is behind the bench. Hakstol is a painfully average coach; Gallant made VGK a winner.

That's a good point. Given all the fanfare over the draft and subsequent free agency I had honestly not thought about Dave Hakstol being their coach in weeks. Yet another move by Francis that I hate.

I love how the media always places the Oilers high and then they suck. I'm not sure how they placed 9th with Smith and that defense.

9-0 Vs. the Sens with most of those games early when they had major goal tending issues
9 of 56 games

The outrage is interesting. The Oilers finished 2020-21 11th overall in win pct. and they are ranked 9 in power rankings. Was Larsson the glue that held it all together? Somehow the Jets showed the rest of the league on how to shut down the McDavid/Drasaitl ? The Oilers won't outscore a bunch of teams on a regular basis?
That is actually a poor ranking for a Team that has the 2 most current MVPs .
How many times were Prime Gretzky, Lemieux, Potvin, Lindstrom, Lindros, Ovechkin teams ranked outside the top 6 going into a season.

They are continuously grossly overrated. Mavi or Raisatl can’t carry the hockey bag of anyone in the list you outlined above….

Harder schedule plus Mike Smith likely not having a career season again
Why am I not surprised you think this is a good ranking for the Oilers
McDavid has made the playoffs 2 times in his career lol @ comparisons to those other guys

And Larsson/Bear >>> Keith, Ceci. Ceci will make it seem like Ethan Bear was Victor Hedman.

I think Seattle still has $10 M in cap space to use.

no clue. I do know that- for one example - the 89-90 Pens with a 24 year old Lemieux (plus Paul Coffey, Mark Recchi, Tom Barrasso, Kevin Stevens etc) finished 5th last in the league (and drafted Jagr as a result)
I also know that prime Potvin and Lidstrom teams had multiple HOF forwards, plus- and this is sort of the point- prime Potvin and Lidstrom- is that Nurse here?

Darnell Nurses name should never be used remotely close to Nicklas Lidstrom or Denis Potvin…… my lord.

I really don’t have much issue with the Flames at 21.
The Oilers and Jets really aren’t much better than the Flames though. The Oilers that high without a goalie is a complete joke.

Until proven otherwise I just can't fathom a worst Flames team than last year. I see the Jets a bit better and on par with the Oilers.
