I have seen some Oilers fans justifying this as something that Holland simply had to do—that under no circumstances could he allow Darnell Nurse to get to free agency. It is literally like handing over to Nurse's agent an actual blank cheque.
Again, they have to tangibly show McDavid that they are building around him in the attempts to keep him down the road, past 3 years.
Keith overpay because he won cups and can take over the actual leadership (in theory, Keith just wants to play a couple years and retire quietly)
Hyman to get some offensive help.
Nurse severe over pay because he is decent and is showing McDavid the commitmemt.

I just can’t get over this contract. Holland is throwing around 7/8 year contracts like they are candy and with the cap being flat for the foreseeable future I just don’t understand what going on in Oilers headquarters. It’s awesome.
See the funny thing is, he could totally repeat last season and not be remotely worth that deal, because there are two types of points
A) Points from playing with elite players
B) Points from being an elite player
And Darnell Nurse is firmly (A)
I think it takes a certain level of skill to be effective playing with elite players, so I don't think you could stick a pylon in his place and expect similar results.
That being said, I'm sure without Mc and Drai, he would be more like a 30 pt guy.

Pretty much the same reason we want Johnny signed. Nurse was walking to UFA status so they run the risk of losing him for nothing and they can’t afford it when you look at the blueline

They have $40 million tied up in McDavid, Nurse, Draisatl, RNH, and Hyman. Another $10 million for Keith/Barrie. Over $4.5 million in buyouts/buried players...$3.2 for Kassian. $4.5 for Koskinen to play backup.
How are they supposed to ice a decent team with that kind of cap structure. It's absolutely nuts.
