Yep... If he somehow decided to show up to camp they'd be completely screwed.

I think they're going to just give Hamonic whatever he wants and then see who wins the 3rd RD spot out of camp. Which will make for one of the worst blue lines in the league, if not the worst.

I think Buffalo and Arizona might have a better blueline than Vancouver next season...

Also, my math assumed Michael DiPietro was the backup for 811K against the cap. If they sign an actual backup (Halak?) that'll cost them about $2M, so they'll have under $4M left to sign those two defensemen.

I appreciate Barca's optimism.

Reminds me of this time last off-season though after trading for Schmidt and signing Hamonic and Holtby:

Jim Benning has improved the defence without even trying haha.

Schmidt fell to his lap, Travis only wants to play for a Western Canadian team and signs arguably the 2nd best goaltender in the market for Ian Clark to rehab. what an offseason lol

Or... Juolevi could look bad in the NHL given his 1 career game, Hamonic/Myers/Edler/Holtby could all continue to get worse, Schmidt could disappoint on a new team, Hughes could have a sophomore slump, etc.

My favorite part is the "haha" and "lol"

Wonder how much Benning paid him to be his personal fanboy

^ that aged well...

Schmidt >>>> Tanev (traded for less than they paid for him)

"signs arguably the 2nd best goaltender in the market" (bought out 10 months later)

Jets giving up on Forbort and Poolman?

Forbort would be good for 6/7 depth

Forbort looked fine as a 4 on the Jets, frankly.

I'd take Forbort back for sure.

He did but looked worse as the year went on playing hard minutes. Would be a great 5-6 for sure. Jets terrible blue line had him overworked.

Any time you see a Dman trade it really makes you wonder how Ken Holland could trade a prospect and a conditional 2nd for the corpse of Duncan Keith?

Nice dump by the Canucks and the Jets making their moves adding 2 top 4 D recently

- Virtanen
- Schmidt
- Gaudette

And all that they gained from that entire selection of players was:
- Matthew Highmore
- 3rd round pick
- Dead cap (hope this dude plays defence for them)

How funny.
Well sort of, I mean it always looks worse if you just list all the players that leave a team via UFA.

The only two players on the list that I think the Canucks will miss are Toffoli and Tanev. The rest of the players are either replaceable.

Markstrom - Demko
Gaudette - Dickinson
Holtby - Halak
Virtanen - Meh
Schmidt - OEL

The cost of Toffoli with his very reasonable cap hit in order to resign Virtanen was a huge blunder, but every step with Virtanen has been a misstep so far from drafting to development to contract. Just sunk cost after sunk cost and not wanting to burn a high first round pick IMO.

So Schmidt wouldn't wave for Winnipeg until Benning said that he would remain with the Canucks if he did not waive.

So some rumours spilling into reddit (apply salt liberally) are both Schmidt and Holby were shipped out because neither of them gelled in the room with the young Canucks core. A big issue was apparently how non-chalant some of the young guys were dealing with COVID restrictions.
