I wouldn't say it's a big overpayment, maybe a little but Sam Bennett did well for himself in doubling his previous salary. Good for him as this could possibly be his last big contract if he does decline at all.
It's just the going rate for players like this, he's shown that he can be productive and play top 6, could even be a steal who knows.

Good for Sam. Hopefully the raise doesn't quench the fire he showed in his new silks; he will need it to live up to the contract.

I like Sam Bennett, and was glad he found success.
I like what he brings ... but was certainly starting to wonder if he'd ever find a role in the upper half of the roster.
This isn't a huge contract but it may be a bit pricey if you bring on ice shooting percentage into it, and factor in adding the other Sam and maybe taking a bit of this Sam's ice time away.
A good example ... Yamamoto.
In 19-20 Yamamoto produced at 3.16 Pts60 with an on ice shooting percentage near the very top of the league at 12.45%. This year he's back down to Earth at 1.28 Pts60 and an on ice shooting percentage of 8.56%.
Was pretty predictable.
Bennett averaged about 1.45 Pts60 in Calgary, and was 1.60 Pts60 last year in Calgary. His average on ice shooting percentage was about 6.75% in his last few years in Calgary which was a bit low (unlucky). In Florida in 10 games he had a Pts60 of 4.87 and an on ice shooting percentage of 10.75% which would be about 35th in the league five on five.
Better linemates to some degree, but the numbers suggest a correction downward is coming.

Need to consider the Flames managed Bennett badly
4.4M is good for 50-60 pts
Give him top linemates and PP time he can do it

Yeah, I'm sure everyone involved is expecting to see a dip. I'm a huge Sam fan, but he's not a 1.5 PPG player like he demonstrated in his 10 regular season games with Florida. At 4.425M, if you get .5 PPG you're doing pretty well, especially when you consider the physical side/good teammate piece that he brings.

Bennett was ridiculously unlucky in Calgary and ridiculously lucky in Florida IMO.
Goals and assists off skates and assess to the point it was comical. Posts and disallowed goals in Calgary. Truth lies somewhere in the middle IMO.

At the end of the day, Bennett needs only produce at a 0.5 ppg clip while logging 18+ minutes a night to be above average value for this deal. It's not even the offensive production, it's his two-way play at center and his PKing that were welcome additions to his team.
Playing with Huberdeau it's not crazy to expect that 0.5 ppg clip to be closer to 0.75ppg, which would be a gross outperformance of the AAV.

Yeah the contract isn't crazy.
But they overpaid a bit based on his career average and short time period in Florida.
but with Sam it's all confidence, maybe more than almost any player I remember. If he rides that confidence from last year in Florida he moves up the roster and stays there. If he hits a blip though he probably retraces to his Calgary averages quickly.
I would guess he's better than the 1.6 P60 in Calgary but no where near the 4.6 P60 in Florida.

$4.4M is dirt cheap for 50-60 pts
$4.4M is fair for 40-50 points
Playing on the 2nd line, he should have no trouble getting that

Flames fault?
Not surprised from you!
I think there were mistakes for sure. But I also think Sam Bennett is a very confidence driven player that is prone to massive inconsistencies.
Plus always have wondered if he just doesn't have the elite finishing skills to finish what he does generate.

Yeah, but if you cut that 10.5 shooting percentage in half, you're still looking at 2.3 PP60, which is good value

So if Bennett goes on to become a star or even a good player, whose fault is it?
It’s still the same Sam Bennett
The Oilers?

He was close to 6.7% in Calgary and didn't produce.
I think it's more sensitive than that. The average NHLer is 8%, he performed well above that in Florida.
A move back to even 9% is a huge dent in production, back to sub 8% and he's a Flame again.

Surely Sam takes some responsibility for his inconsistent play. Sam is the type of player that needs to be balls to the wall to be effective. Too many nights off the last few years.

Oilers? No idea what you're talking about.
See not being radically on one side of every single issue (wherever you can hammer the team) allows one to be pretty calm about things like this.
The team made mistakes, Bennett didn't deliver ... a change of scenery was needed.
I don't think his ten game heater is representative.
I know you're cheering for it though! Just think of the pessimistic chaos you can cause down the road!

Thought this was really interesting.
In Calgary Bennett had really been told to go be a crash and bang winger...and in Florida it was a lot more about speed and generating off the rush (with Huberdeau and Duclair fitting that as well).
Seems like he really excelled with that strategy/system. Something interesting to watch.

That is interesting, because the Flames as a whole seemed to really struggle generating anything on the rush.
...almost as if hiring bad coaches is bad for the team, and the players...
Hopefully this coming season (...with Eichel) will really show us just how much a real coach can get out of the players that are still here.

but you aren't factoring in line and opportunity there
I was saying: take his Florida numbers from last year and reduce the shooting percentage to a sustainable level, and he is still producing plenty for the contract
