It is hilarious that the entry draft isn’t until tomorrow and the Oilers have brined through 10-11M in their cap space on Keith and Hyman. Talk about money burning a hole in his pocket.

I don't see Holland as desperate, I see him as having a 4 year window, under McDavid's current contract.
Hyman is a really good player, and exactly what they need. Adding term, in order to keep his cap hit from being insane, is a great move - the later years are a problem for the later years.
I think this is probably the best move Holland has made in Edmonton and I wish the Flames had grabbed him. The problem is that the Flames are not in the same win-now window that the Oilers are, and it would not be a good move for the Flames to commit to a contract like this.

Not really. Without buying out players the Oilers are pretty much screwed as you have to account for your RFAs.
Hyman ($5.5M)-McHobo ($12.5M)- Yamamoto ($2M)
The Tenderness ($5.125M)-German Gretzky ($8.5M)-Pull My RV ($1.175M)
Shore ($850K)-Turris ($$1.65M)-Neal ($5.75M)
McLeod ($835K)- Jar Jar Binks ($1.5M)-Kassian ($3.2M)
Archibald ($1.5M)
Nurse ($5.6M)- Barrie ($5M)
Keith ($5.54M)-Bear ($2M)
Russell ($1.2M)-Bouchard ($833K)
Broberg ($864K)
Koskinen ($4.5M)
Smith ($2M)
Cap hit: $80.619M
Cap space: $881K

Kinda like signing defensive liability Tyson Barrie for his PP prowess on a team that doesn’t need help on the PP but stinks defensively.

I would think that Neal and Koskinen will be bought out now.

I fail to see how the Flames are not in win now mode? They brought a coach out of retirement to try and win.
I think this is a terrible move and the optics will crush it just like the Lucic deal. Hyman is coming in now with the weight of this deal on his shoulders and a fanbase that is at best 50% skeptical about this deal already. If he stumbles they will be frothing at the mouth about Hyman being a bad deal. It is exactly what happened to Lucic.
I see Oiler fans saying “well Hyman is better than Lucic” well Lucic was 28 when he signed with the Oil and had 6 seasons that were better than Zach’s career high.
Hyman has struggled with injuries the last couple years and plays a style that will be prone to breakdown. I heard Dreger refer to him as top 6/top 9 forward and they are paying him 1st/2nd line wing money now for a player that is likely going to decline quickly.

Poster I was responding to said we couldn’t afford Barrie. You just put him in and signed our RFAs without buying anyone out or any trades. Not so sure how that equals screwed?
Zero chance JJ gets 1.5 btw (750k x 8 years is my guess )

The Klefbom space gives Holland a little flexibility. Capfriendly has the Oilers at the following by position
Forwards - 10 forwards at 41.084 million
Defence - 7 dman at 16.840 million
Goalies - 2 goalies at 5.285 million
Dead cap - 2.250 million
Total - 65.459 million
If you add 5 million for Hyman they are at 70.5 million or so. If you add the rumored Smith net difference from Stalock they are at 71.75 million, so they would have about 9 million to sign 2 forwards and possibly improve the defence.

I mean Barrie for 5m is possible, I suppose... another 8 year deal incoming?

It is so weird that between the two teams that have combined for a grand total of two playoff-game wins in the past two years, one of them is in a "win-now" window. It is even weirder that that team has accounted for 0 of those playoff game wins.

Here’s capfriendly after putting Klef on ltir, signing Hyman and smith and putting the players who aren’t going to make the team down. No buyouts and no trades yet

It's the exact same roster as lost season with the addition of Hyman and then Keith in for Larsson (net loss). You're screwed. Buyouts may provide a little more breathing room, but you're blowing another $3.5M a year for guys that aren't playing for you.

He made $1.3M last season. He's not taking a cut. Not after Holland has been handing out contracts like candy.

The point was that there’s room. I don’t see that being the roster

yeah, I think the term is terrible for the oilers...the AAV isn't terrible but 7-8 years is a long time.
I would also agree the Flames are in 'Win now' mode... I mean we aren't rebuilding, we're spending to the cap for the past bunch of years, our best players are in the back half of their twenties or older except for a few ....sounds like 'win now' to me.

I predict he'll be good for 2 or a max of 3 years. This is no star we are talking about.
McDavid probably needed to see something tangible from the GM after the Keith debacle, the Smith signing, and watching Larssen walk. I imagine we see them trade their 1st this year also to make McDavid happy.
The roster and cap are a disaster. Rivalry aside, not sure wtf Holland is thinking.
