I'd feel better about this if I had any confidence in Treliving to use the cap space wisely.

Here's hoping it turns out like the NY Islanders after Tavares - somehow became an improved team, more than the sum of their parts, and not Detroit after losing Lidstrom - completely collapsed as a franchise and have never recovered since.

It is tough to see Mark Giordano go like that but he is an older player, still a good player I think and will be interesting seeing him play against the Flames.

Are any of the other selections Captains currently, probably a big reason why Seattle picked him.

Flames are a mess!

This will probably kickstart the rebuild.

It would have been nice to see him play his whole career in Calgary but I don't mind the extra cap space. Just put it to good use.

Not to mention the biggest Iginla era factor, Darryl.

You mean you don't want him to spend it on 4th line role players?

Sad and glad.

Sad, because Gio was a warrior for SO long and had a great run with the Flames...an inspirational story for undrafted guys that the story ain't over just because they weren't picked...and a terrific community-oriented guy. (And apparently the cousin of my mom's old gardener in Toronto!)

Glad because it offers the Flames the opportunity to begin a new era, with new leadership and a different mindset - IF they can get there. I'm doubtful, but willing to wait and see. Good not to give up assets to retain him. A waste, though, if all they do is re-sign retreads with the opened cap space.

4th line role players would be an improvement on non-NHL players like James Neal and Troy Brouwer.

A great captain and ambassador for the city.

Also the first NHL player to wear a letter on their jersey instead of a number.

This fully cements that the Kraken are now my 2nd favorite team.

This feels like when Jenny is on the bus leaving Forrest behind in DC. You can't help but wish her nothing but the best.

I wish Gio nothing but the best. His Norris season was obviously memorable, but I'd argue the year the Flames finished 2nd, he was the best player on the team that year as well. I can't recall a d-man who was that dominant since the Pronger days.

That was the season he won the Norris, was it not?

The Greatest player to ever come out of the KHL!!!!

We all appreciate your warrior years with us, even though it left you slow and broken the past couple of seasons!

Eff that crap. Seattle can keep all their Vancouver-lite fans to themselves.

Robbed of a Norris and probably 2 Olympic squads, one of the best ever Flames. No doubt will be the first Kraken Captain.

Young and fresh forever.

Mixed emotions. On the one hand I find it refreshing the Flames aren't making poor decisions with players based on loyalty. On the other and I don't have any confidence in the GM/team to make the most of it.
