If he’s on the team, he brings a certain element they lack beyond Lucic.
If he’s not, he barely registers against the cap.
Who cares.

Everyone is required to care, because Treliving should be fired immediately.
Get with the program, Comrade.

Fill an expansion draft requirement. That’s it.

Of course we did.
Its fine, but he needs to play in the bottom 6 exclusively.

Yes. The issue is that the last time Calgary signed somebody solely for that purpose, they ended up playing him anyway. And he, like Ritchie, was no good.

ED requirement, tough. 13th forward. Ok, sure.
Besides that he’s pretty awful. My biggest concern I that he wont be a 4th liner because Sutter seems to like him. At least it’s only 1 year.

Because the Flames always do everything exactly the same way every single time.
Who are you talking about anyway? I can only remember Tom McCollum.

How shocked would you be if Ritchie spent time on the top 3 lines this year?
I would actually be shocked if he didn't.
I think he'll get quite a bit of use for "someone only signed for expansion reasons."

And probably the best option out of the others, like Nordstrom, Leivo, Simon, Rinaldo, and whoever else. Assuming those guys haven't signed overseas yet anyway.

If he’s on a top 9 line it will be as a fill-in. That happens. Who would you have signed for expansion purposes?
BTW Bart was a bit different. He was signed for two years, indicating they were going to at least try him. Plus they wanted some flexibility to cut some underperformers like Wideman and Jokipaaka loose.

I would be shocked if the Flames never had an injury, suspension, or game misconduct penalty on their top three lines all season, and therefore were able to go the whole season without using a 4th-line forward on a higher line.
Last year Ritchie was used intermittently as a top-6 RW because the team absolutely refused to move Lindholm back to the wing and all the other options, except Mangiapane, blew chunks. Ritchie wasn't noticeably worse than Leivo, Nordstrom, or Simon in that role. If Tkachuk really is being converted to RW full-time, as it currently appears, that is much less likely to happen again.
I fault the Flames' management and coaches for keeping Lindholm at C come hell or high water. That not only made RW a wasteland, it pushed Bennett out of his logical roster spot (the one they had previously promised to try him at) and ended in pushing him right off the team. It may have maximized Lindholm's performance for the year, but it did far more harm than good to the team as a whole. I would have told Lindholm, ‘So sorry, but we need at least one good player on the right side and you're it. We have other guys who can play centre.’

Nordstrom did IIRC. Leivo has a better skill set but he has injury issues and also would have wanted more. Rinaldo actually doesn’t meet the games played criteria. And Simon was the biggest bust here IMO.

Also, there are other teams that slot guys like Spezza or Perry onto bottom lines at league min deals and get guys that are around .5 ppg in that role. But those are playoff teams
|
Spezza said himself he would play for the Leafs less than league min if he could. That's poor comparison, but I see you are willing to take the cheap shot anyway, no surprise.
If there happens to be a player out there with little tread left on the tire who is willing to play for the Calgary Flames for league min on a one year deal, by all means, let us know. Let Treliving know while you're at it. Any 37+ year old UFA's out there from Southern Alberta or Sask?....(honest question)

I don’t mind this. We need some forwards who weigh more than 135 lbs.
Just don’t play him on the first line please!!

Ryan Getzlaf fits the bill, but he is too young at 36.

I didn’t mind Leivo in the bottom 6.
Top 6 made me nauseous at times.

Ryan Getzlaf doesn’t want to leave Anaheim.
The challenge here, which seems lost on DM, is the player has to want to play for your team. Especially those on league min deals. Of course the Flames could offer more than league min, but then we would be reading posts about how Treliving should be fired immediately for signing said player.
