There were a few around that time, but Kipper is certainly an example - and Flames fans certainly didn't offer up any moral objections, even though when the deal was signed, folks were speculating that he would never play that final year. It was purely there to bring down the AAV

I think the upcoming expansion draft plays a bigger role in the NHL being unhappy with this. Habs can leave Weber unprotected and protect Chiriot who Kraken is rumoured to want. But is he as badly hurt as they say or is he just banged up from a long way off run? Are the Kraken allowed to do a medical check on a ayer before choosing him for the expansion draft?

If this is the end of Weber's career, he was a fun player to watch. Big hits, big clappers, gold medals, offer sheets, blockbuster trades. Very exciting career

Yep. Credit to Kipper as he actually played a season when his money dipped to $3 million as that's something we haven't seen with these other players. The last year was only worth $1.5 million but at least he retired. If the players retired it wouldn't be as much of an issue but teams of course don't want the cap penalties and it's in their best interest to keep the player on LTIR and as a bonus to the player he still gets paid..

Good point. I did see Chiarot on some of the mock drafts.

Actually Briere's 8 year contract was first. $6.5 mil AAV that dropped to $3 mil and $2 mil salary in the final 2 years of the contract. Signed on July 1, 2007.

Kiprusoff's contract was signed on October 10, 2007.

Briere doesn't get as much notice because the Flyers ended up buying out the contract before he got to those final years.

Default Shea Weber's career threatened by lingering foot, ankle problems

No. They just ride off into the sunset so it's not the same as disability for most employees that are subject to strict rules and have to constantly prove they can't work. These guys claim they can't play and that's it as once they go on LTIR they are essentially retired. Weber has four years left on his deal. One would think after a year or two his ankle would be in a lot better shape than today so in the real world he would have to come back and play the last two years of his deal but this isn't the real world. This is the NHL where we just saw a team win the cup by being $18 million over the cap so the comparisons to what happens in regular workplace doesn't really apply.

Firstly, TB wasn’t over the cap when the won the SC, as there is no cap in the playoffs.

Secondly, some of these players subject to LTIR are getting some of their salary paid by insurance. You can assume that insurance companies are doing an exceptional amount of due diligence.

And thirdly, players go on LTIR each year, so there would be certain things required each year.

True, but you'll never convince the people who want to think the Lightning cheated.

But you see, the insurance companies were obviously in on the conspiracy, because reasons.

Yeah, I know. None of it holds together, but it gives hockey fans an excuse for their teams not winning the Cup. The good guys didn't get beat, the bad guys cheated! Jump to that conclusion first, and find something that can be used for evidence afterwards.
