Ya hopefully his agent is straight with the Flames as to his intentions.

If the intention is to compete they should re-sign him, only player on the team skilled enough to generate offense. If they intend to rebuild they should trade him.

My guess is they pretend to be a playoff contender and hold him till the deadline before likely walking him to free agency due to the chase for a wild card spot and 2-3 home playoff games.

Trade. I'm not a big fan of sinking a large chunk of cap space for a regular season only player

Yeah, that could be tricky. Thanks for pointing that out, people seem to think $8M/yr as the limit so far, I think that is fair. Long term or short term? Only trade for futures? Only trade for another impact forward? I am not sure what options to make, better minds than mine would have to figure that out.

As others have said, if he won't resign or someone offers a huge package.

Trade him.

Otherwise resign him if possible.

Well someone suggested keeping it simple for now so I'll just post the two option. Long off-season so we can always do others.

I think Bennett has a better chance of re-signing with the Flames than Gaudreau

If he’s not signed by the end of August, trade.

But do what it takes to sign him. This team (supposedly) has the coach and goalie to be all-in now, can’t downgrade the elite talent.

I firmly want to see the flames win a another cup before I die. Only way that happens is by truly tanking and drafting top5 a few times during that time frame. As such, I vote for a scorched earth rebuild.

Voted for trade.

How is that low, I'm saying I think we have a zero chance of signing him. Honestly why would he

Would a five year extension with a 8.5 AAV get it done? Otherwise, I think you gotta look at moving him this offseason

Best buds with Monny (who was injured so he thinks there is more there), some degree of loyalty to the org, likes the teammates, likes the city?

I dunno. I don’t pretend to know what he thinks but can see a way to rationalize a non zero probability

Trade, not because I don’t love Johnny, but I think we should rebuild and he has tremendous value.

What would you be targeting? Do you believe it's scorched earth if they deal him?

Why would he sign only a 5 year contract. It’s his one real chance at UFA, you maximize term, otherwise you become a UFA when you are quite old.

If the Flames sign Johnny I think it will need to be 8 years or else he will test the market.

I voted trade because I simply don’t believe he wants to stay

No...to me its all asset management. This team as it sits with Sutter and company simply isnt going full rebuild at this point.

because of some recent deals involving picks, there is a void as you and others have pointed out of ready guys.

So the last thing this club can afford is to see JG limit this club to 5 teams he can go to (which would obviously diminish the return whatever that is) ot even worse, walk for nothing a year from now.

So in my eyes you get at least one decent pick back and an upper tier player and if there is enough interest, a bit of a bidding war, another piece

Preferably a RW/RS who can chip in with 20-30 and a 1st round pick. If the team he is going to is likely to finish quite high in the standings then I would want another piece....a 2nd or a promising prospect that may still be a year away.

Otherwise a really good C, but GMs tend to hold onto those. I think Eichel is a pipe dream myself and there are a couple red flags health wise there too.

Your Philly proposal is something i would consider but if im dealing with them i would do anything i could to get Couturier as the return, though it may be impossible and would have to take back an ugly contract as well im thinking.

Couturier is the Flyers best player, a 200 foot centre who is signed for two years at $4.33M. He actually gets more points than Johnny.

Johnny has 1 year left on his deal at a cap hit $2.42M more.

That’s a trade that is not happening.
