when Davidson left St. L and went to Columbus he was supposedly interested in taking over the Flames. The Flames would not make room for him and the rest is history.

Do the Flames take a big run at Davidson?? Davidson is 68 and might not be interested in the Flames 3-4 year project.

The only reason to keep Treliving would be that there was no obvious replacement that would be better and want to be in Calgary. Maybe make Davidson his boss: a consultant with veto power.

Davidson and Lombardi as your upper management group and Sutter coaching is a pretty good leadership group.

This seems like a great opportunity to blow out our front office.

Let's see how we flub this.

Must be extremely frustrating to get fired just as all the pieces are coming together to be a perennial cup contender.

Haha, this is like that time James Dolan hired Isiah Thomas to be the Knicks' GM and they were a laughingstock of the NBA for half a decade.

Would be great to see them here but knowing the Flames I doubt very much it will happen or that they will want to come here.

way back, Drury either waived his NMC or did not apply for medical exemption, paving the way for the Rangers to buy him out of his contract. That favor cost Drury a few million, and saved the Rangers a few million in cap space. That favor is being re-paid today

Davidson should be an automatic. Give some rudder to Trelivings tenure.

I dont know if Gorton is a better option over Treliv8ng.

I will say that that the Rangers did build things up nicely, but some crazy weird thing went down with the organization this year as pointed out earlier.

I'd really put out the welcome mat for Davidson though. Dude is good stuff.

The Mike Illich special. Player takes a discount while they are playing, then gets on the payroll after their career.

I had not heard this. But I know JD used to live in Calgary.

Bringing him in over top of Treliving would be the same as firing him.

Davidson used to have a home in the Invermere area. My Dad did an insurance claim for him there when I was a kid. Another highschool friend of mine had a Grand father who owned a lot of property and buildings in the Invermere/Radium area and he also knew John Davidson pretty well.

If Davidson is game, I'd have him in Calgary in a heartbeat to take over as President. Extermely well respected guy, and he oversaw some decent rebuilds in St.Louis, and Columbus. Even the Rangers have a good team, they got put in the deepest Division this year and of all the teams who'll miss the playoffs, they are the top team and likely would have been in any of the other three Divisions.

I hate the Rangers, but I have a lot of respect for JD, and think very highly of him.

Gorton, I'm not as sure of. Like a lot of guys he has some hits, but he also does have a lot of misses too. Overall I think he has that team going the right way. But it is a team who can sign a top player if they want to without too much trouble. Very few guys are refusing to play in MSG.

At the same draft, gorton traded goaltender andrew raycroft to the toronto maple leafs for goalie prospect tuukka rask.[3] raycroft was coming off a subpar season and his two-year stint in toronto would prove disastrous, with the leafs buying him out of the final year of his contract.[4] rask, meanwhile, had been selected in the first round of the 2005 nhl entry draft by toronto and went on to win the vezina trophy as the league's best goaltender in the 2013-14 season.[5] rask has also led the bruins to two stanley cup finals appearances; in 2013 and 2019. On july 1, gorton signed zdeno chara and marc savard as free agents. Chara would go on to win the norris trophy in 2009 as the nhl's best defenseman while under the contract signed by gorton.
hire this man

Dolan is a hands on owner and his impatience with coaches and executives with the Knicks seems be mirrored with this decision as well.

Davidson is a well respected professional with a track record of success in the NHL, not the right fit for the Flames, we sure the Sabres don’t have any AGMs being groomed for a full time role?

I really like the idea of Gorton. He's probably a better fit for where I think that the Flames need to go than Davidson is.

IMO this does not reflect well on either of the two fired, shows their true character. They valued their own image amongst their peers and the league more than they cared about the safety and well being of their players. Self preservation at its finest.
and it worked. look at how everyone here wants to hire them this second.

I doubt we'll ever know how much the Wilson incident was a part of the firing, though.

Welp, hope this is the start of a decades long decline of the Rangers organization, and Adam Fox is there to witness all of it. Yes, I'm still petty as a fan lol.

This is surprising news to me.

I would bet that Davidson knows at least some of the ownership group here in Calgary too. I wonder if this is a direction that the Flames want to take, especially if they decide to move on from Treliving.

I don't think they can add a President without removing Treliving at the same time - would be a weird lame-duck GM move who happens to have term. Should get the owners thinking.

Have to think Davidson will get snapped-up really quickly too.

Last nights statement did not sound like a JD sanctioned statement, but what organization would release a statement on the organizations behalf without getting one of those guys approvals? It just doesn’t work like that where the communications team can fire off anything. Everyone is allowed to lose their mind at some point and I’d be inclined to think JD did approve it in the moment. The PR backlash probably came from Dolan to label those guys negatively to say they were backtracking because I can’t see it.

I wasn’t a fan of the Rangers and JD because he seemed to be languishing much like the Flames are with a mediocre roster for awhile, while keeping Lundqvist way too long. But I have to admit now they turned the tides pretty quickly even though this team didn’t do as well this year. The team is on the right track. Dolan really really messed up with this probably due to political pressure from the league to some degree because it was way to early to get rid of Gorton. If I were a Rags fan I’d be pretty upset as there’s a small chance the new guy will be better than the old.
