Even in its heyday porn stars weren't paid very much. There were a few big names who made lots of money. Even then, a lot of them were forced into the work by their "boyfriends". The vast majority of girls involved in porn are not, and were not, high end stars who dictated their own careers. They were typically given a surprisingly low fee flat fee for a video. Then the video production companies maintained the rights to the film in perpetuity. I know a girl who made a video in the early 2000s. She later became a mom, and was trying to get production of the video halted. She was SOL and had only been paid $3,000, which to a 20 year old in 2002 was a lot of money, but nothing compared to what it ended up costing her.

With the internet now, porn stars can make a lot of money through other means, particularly as influencers. There's also other options like onlyfans and celebrity escorting. The ability to build a brand and do it on your own terms has been vastly expanded by streaming. The actual porn videos are essentially just advertising for their own social media.

I disagree that the old video studio model was better off for the performers than the current model. A lot of the bigger stars now earn millions a year off social media, and they have a lot more control over their own careers. Whereas in the past, their careers depending on signing sleezy multi-video deals and forced performances.

OnlyFans in particular has been a massive windfall. It allows anyone with a webcam to set up a subscription service with only a 20% commission fee. The earnings are quite incredible:

Mia Khalifa, a former porn star is on that list, and earns over $6 million USD/month. Compare that to the stories of coked up and coerced "stars" from the video era.

While I was overseas one of my jobs was doing MIR cals to all the different company positions/section houses.

We would hit each location up 2-3 times a week and handle their medical concerns. Essentially we where their GP making house calls.

Speaking of Cadvision my computer guy at the time worked at cadvision, I was 14 and knew enough to break the computer but not fix it. One time he offered me a sweet deal on internet which ended up being me paying him for access to his company account so it was a good deal for all.

Fast forward a couple months and i'm constantly on the internet learning and I learned how to gain access to a cadvision shell account and I used that to download all the porn and warez in the world at top speeds like I said I knew enough and what I didn't realize is that they saw everything I downloaded and it was stored on their servers before I slowly transferred it to my PC. Needless to say my guy got busted hard for giving me the access alone and what I did with it was icing on his firing cake.

Oh my god, Showgirls was the most opposite of sexy for me. What's her face was so awkward and weird in the dancing and sex scenes that it felt like they recruited an amish/nun to try to be a stripper.



I watch that movie more for the unintended comedy then the sexuality. Plus you can mix in her saved by the bell caffeine addiction with this and suddenly the movie makes sense if you pretend that she's the saved by the bell character driven insane by caffeine and a failing grade in civics and she realized that she was pimped out by Zack Morris for years.

Ethical pornography is an interesting topic. I am under the impression that it is easier to be a sex worker now then perhaps ten years ago. I think that the advent of OnlyFans and other "crowd sourced" porn cuts out a lot of the pimps and trafficker's. Still, that will always be an element I am afraid. Sex work is not a first choice for most.
