Stone was a huge pickup at the time. Flames won 10 in a row after he was acquired and he was solid in that rental run. The extension that cost the team 3.5M and an additional pick was a huge mistake.

That's a bit of an apples to oranges comparison... yes Gustaffson had one great season in 18-19, but to really get a full picture of how good a player is, you have to look at a larger sample size. Stall has had a long career of solid production, which continued somewhat consistently throughout his stints in Carolina and Minnesota. That stretch of production continued all the way up to and including 19-20. That, to me, is very different from just having one great season.
The Stone example illustrates this point... he played very well during that rental run, but that run in & of itself was not necessarily indicative of how good the player was overall. That level of play didn't continue into the following season. Nevertheless, he gave the Flames good value during that one run for what they traded away to acquire him.
So yes, the Flames rental pickups were solid moves. This one by Montreal could be one as well.
