Have we ever seen Backs and Gaudreau (is there any non-pp stats?) I wonder if we started making JG into more goal scorer than passer and put him with a strong set up player maker plus a corner digger we wouldn't love the results.

They played together for a stretch last year and it wasn't great. I thought Backlund showed better chemistry with Monahan than with Gaudreau. But it also happened amid a bad stretch of games for Backlund when he was not at his best.

Wasn't sure which Backlund topic to bump but man am I happy how his contract is aging.

Against Edmonton one of Calgary's best players and that at the very end of year four on a six year deal. Now coming into year five and the narrative is shut down center, and one of the better third line centers in the league.

His contract is aging even better than Frolik's (one bad season)

One of my all-time favorite Flames. I really hope he gets the C. He’s earned it

Totally agreed. But I think it is fair to call Backlund one of the BEST third-line centres in the League. As near as I can tell, there may be only one or two that are better, but he is clearly, easily in the conversation for the best #3.

Every team needs a Backlund. He’s like a jack knife.

Awesome team guy.

Keep him well hydrated. We'll need a lot more of that spit.

Selke talk from an outside source in year 4 of a 5 year contract that had many talking about cap disaster.

Hope this guy goes coast to coast as a Flame.

Theoretically losing Backlund may make the most upset since we traded Iggy. Make of that what you will.

I would like Backlund to win a few Selkes between now and the end of his career, all with the Flames… as their captain. He’s earned at least that much.

Right or wrong (I think it's wrong), there isn't a recent track record of players winning the trophy unless they are putting up big offensive numbers as well.

The closest thing I can recall is Bergeron winning it in 2017 with only 53 points scored. I would imagine Backlund would need to be close to those numbers to get serious consideration this year despite his excellence in the other 2 zones.

Maybe he'll get special dispensation as this team has an anemic offense and he's basically been the number one centre a lot of nights.

Yeah, it's really "Best offensive player who is pretty good at checking". I'd sure liek to see a guy who shadows the best players win one day. A Steve Kasper/Doug Jarvis type.

I was worried about how this contract would age. I was wrong. Flat wrong. Backlund is a model professional.

It's a damn shame I don't have a Backlund jersey.

Baffling.

I have a mother !@#$ing James Neal jersey in the closet, yet I never bought a Mikael Backlund.

...my bad.
