Avoiding frozen water pipes while furnace is broken

I'm sorry, but if your suggesting "to keep it to yourself" then you couldn't be more hypocritical. Your post was a completely off topic, a personal attack and really without any awareness of the context of the post from which you were referring too.

I would also suggest people winterize and maintain heat to their outside faucets. I had the heat cut out years ago in similar weather for 2 days. The only think to burst was the pipe leading to the outside faucet, inside the house but ajointed to the faucet.

I suppose it is because it is closest to outside but it dumped quite a bit of water in a short time before water was shut off.

The frost free ones should prevent that by having the valve in the warm space(in theory). I have one installed after I had a burst like yours. The other one I just have a shut off valve so I drain that every fall. I'll probably replace it with frost free this summer.

Hah, I have that setup, but it was when I bought the house. During possession the old owner shut the heat off accidentally and left. The key is they didn’t winterize!

So our realtor shows up and noticed the house was frozen, turns on heat and kaboom.

This is a great call out though to anyone without a winterize shut off valve.

I am dealing with this issue as our furnace decided to keel over at 1 am Sunday morning.

Running two space heaters in the basement, 2 on the main floor and 1 on the top floor - dreading what my February power bill will total.

I’ve had this happen a few times over the years, waiting a day or two to get the furnace fixed. I just turned on the oven with the door open to keep the house above freezing and used electric space heaters in the rooms I’m using. Pipes don’t freeze immediately and the basement doesn’t get too cold right away. If you have a big house this might not work for you.

Gas fireplace is also helpful. I’ve found it can hear the entire main floor if needed. Sometimes I wish I had one in the basement
