I think this is a bit of a bad matchup for the Flames as they can't score 5 on 5 and can't beat the Oilers in a special teams battle.

I haven't liked Simon's last few games, but Leivo is getting better and better and has some of the best underlying numbers on the team.

He's clearly a top nine player in this league even if he doesn't produce as he doesn't hold back other players and keeps the ice tilted in his favour.

Look around the league and you'll see a Simon/Bennett in every team's top nine ... that's salary cap hockey.

Okay, hold on a second.

Oilers are 5th from the bottom in GAA/GP. Their PK is operating at 73%, good for 7th worst in the league, which says their goals against isn't just a product of their special teams deficiencies since it ranks higher than their overall GAA/GP rate. If we can't score against them 5 on 5, then yes, we have problems, but I suspect we will.

Also let's look at combined special teams percentages:

Oilers: PP-27.3% (8th) + PK-73.2% (25th) = 100.5%

Flames: PP-22.7% (12th) + PK-80.0% (15th) = 102.7%

Overall, we are the better team.

If you take away everyone's games against Ottawa the records are this:

Jets 4-3-1
Flames 4-5-1
Oilers 4-6
Canucks 3-8

Canucks suck obviously. Oilers suck too, but it remains to be seen if their top 2 players can keep keep them afloat all season. Their D and bottom 6 are truly dreadful. Flames and Jets pretty even, if just one of Flames' losses against the Jets went the other way the Flames would have a winning record and the Jets would have a losing record. Plus the Jets have only played the Leafs once and haven't played the Canadiens at all yet.

All in all the Flames have played poorly so far but their competition isn't really that scary. To turn things around they gotta start tonight and show those losers up north who's boss!

No idea who's calling the game, but am already tired of the:
A) McDavid fellation with clips of goals against the Leafs.
B) Year old goalie fight references
C) The ISO cams on Tkachuk and Kassain and the out loud wondering after every single whistle if their skirmishes are done.

"Thankfully" the Bennett situation will take up some of the required sensationalism.

As for the game, the Oilers are more of a one trick pony than the Flames are currently, Ward has to have his lines matched and players then have to execute. And if the game is right in the 3rd, can Ward get anything extra out of his team.

Not going to get too much variation from the Oilers, it's going to be constant McDavid and Driasital and very little adaptation to change up their look...so with the Flames having much better overall roster of talent, have to take advantage of that fact. That they with 6 of their forwards are better then the bottom 7 of the Oilers forwards, 5 of their 6 defense are better than anything on the Oilers, and their goalie is a lot better than Koskinen by a mile.

Looking forward to the game but this is the first time in the last couple of years I feel nervous about our matchup with the Oilers.

Brodie became very effective at checking McDavid and our old 3M line also held him in check. I love Tanev’s game so far, and Tanev-Hanifin have been an elite pairing. But I don’t know who else will step up as that shutdown unit against McDavid/Draisaitl who you know will be on the ice basically the entire game.

Also not looking forward to tonight’s HNIC storylines, which will be the Oilers are the next coming of Moscow Dynamo, and the Flames are a drama-fest of trade requests and players-only meetings.
