I'm curious to know how many shots we take that miss the net. Also curious to know what our team shooting % is.

I think they're just starting to get in the rhythm of things. Not an ideal start by any means but they had a really poorly timed break in there and took a few games to find some semblance of their game again. So that has handicapped the already small sample size.

I keep going back to the fact that every season it takes a month or more for teams to get into the flow. We're not even there and had less prep than normal.

Key depth guys like Backlund and Ryan have a lot more to give and should improve as we go along. Lucic too. Those guys need games to get up to speed at their ages.

So I want to see how it plays out.

If they can have on average better first periods I think they'll win much more frequently. First thing is fixing the starts. Don't lose the first period. Go from there.
What are the advanced stats, at 5on5 when considered relative to the score?

Flames sure seem to suck if they are tied or have a lead 8 games in. Only time they generate chances at 5on5 is after being down by a goal or two.

It's also pretty cute that we're just a few days after the player only meeting, yet back to complaining about garbage first periods and getting down multiple goals early.

Need a regulation win on Thursday to take the series.

Can’t come from behind every game, need to figure out a way to start on time.

Flames are gonna need their "depth" guys to step up this year.

It's pretty glaring that if Gaudreau, Monahan, Lindholm or Backlund aren't on the ice, barely anything is happening in the offensive zone.
Even the good guys seem to have a habit of skating into double coverage or forcing passes through 4 sets of legs or QB flips into the O-zone.

The whole team does need to show more effort. They just look rather slow and lazy for the majority of the game.

Little to no game plan once they hit the blue line.

It's gotta change or they aren't gonna accomplish much this year.

That being said. It's early. If they look this lackluster in 10 games I'm gonna be getting a bit lackluster in my efforts to watch. Haha.

Very true about depth.

Lindholm and Gaudreau can't produce every single game.

Some help from Bread, Backlund, Ryan, the D, hell even Bennett would take the team very far.

The top forwards have arguably done the job to this point. But they haven't had support, hence why we're putting up 2 or 3 but have trouble putting many more pucks in than that on a given night.

Lindholm- Tkachuk were great to start year and they will be great again. I don't get the reactionary posts about splitting them up. Tkachuk had a couple points tonight and he was looking better at end. He's too good a player.

Backlund is improving too he had a few early mishandles but he also had some great defensive plays (ex Connor in slot). Players are getting the feel the touch back. Finding their rhythm or groove. It takes time - but you can see it coming.

Again, that was a good start, they looked very good. I'm certain this CGY team is going to get rolling. What's encouraging actually is a full 60 min performance hasn't come yet (maybe that early 3-0 win) but it looks close. Everyone wants it immediately I'm sure the team does too but if they start like they did and are able to put those periods together where the come in waves they are going be an amazing team - it's so close!

Game Takes: Jets 3 Flames 2

- Flames and Rittich start slowly
- good push in the third comes close to sending the game to overtime.
- Tkachuk scores two despite his line struggling again
- Gaudreau extends point streak to start the season to nine games

I think we're inching closer too.

Things will change a lot for this team when one or two of the depth forwards get off the schneid and start chipping in.

Just need to focus on bringing intensity to start games and setting the tone.

Like I said with Marky, this is a very confident team if working with a lead.

Damn!! I thought for sure we would tie it when we started rolling there, can’t keep putting ourselves behind in games though it’s a bad habit. We need to dominate at the start like we are when we get to the third and I think it will come!!

Thinking back I'm really liking Monahan this year. Carries the puck more and has been noticible in a good way in both ends.

I thought it was a pretty boring and lifeless game for both sides tonight. In the end the Jets got one more save and had the better goaltending but neither team really impressed.

Overall though I’m going to try to remain positive with how the season has went so far.

Flames have had the hardest schedule in the league so far according to hockey reference and have gotten through this first stretch at 4-4-1 including the stumble after the break.

Even considering the hard schedule the Flames are 8th in Corsi For % at 5v5, 7th in xGF% at 5v5, but 29th in shooting percentage at 5v5...that should normalize.

In terms of player performance:

Gaudreau, Monahan, Lindholm, Hanifin, and Tanev have all looked great.

Tkachuk, Mangiapane, Dube, Andersson, Valimaki, Nesterov, and Lucic have showed flashes of being good but have been also been poor at times. I think they will find some consistency as the season goes on.

Backlund, Giordano, And Ryan have been very poor by their standards and I have faith they will turn it around with more games to get in a rhythm.

Bennett, Leivo, and Simon have more to give still IMO and I think could be contributors in the right role.

Biggest thing for me is I really think we need to figure out our forward lines but I think once we find some chemistry up front this team could really take off offensively.

Overall the biggest question marks coming into the season were Gaudreau+Monahan, the defense core, and how Markstrom & Tanev would fit in, and so far these have all been positives. Now we just need to get the rest going.

Go Flames Go!

Backlund would probably benefit from a favourable match-up here and there, and not having to be in the linemate blender. That's probably why he doesn't look quite as good as normal and seems a little off.

It's hard to build momentum and confidence to get going offensively when 65-70% of your deployment is in the d-zone.

What game are you watching? He’s been arguably our worst player not named Ryan or Nordstrom every night

As for your question, I direct it to you as well

Ryan and Nordstrom have been good the last couple of games

Tkachuk was productive tonight but has been way below expectations so far

The whole F group except for 23 snd 13 have been all over the map

I like Lucic and I think he makes every one of his teammates two inches taller when he’s in the lineup but when you have Rinaldo and Ritchie on the roster, maybe you can give them the second of a back to back and give old man Looch a rest?

Lindholm has been great at Center too.

11 points in 9 games and he’s been the most consistent guy on that line. Tkachuk and Dube have been up and down but IMO he’s been pretty good pretty much every night but one.
