Alexander Nylander just had surgery for a lingering issue that will keep him out the season.
Nyquist and Seguin both had surgery for lingering issues in November that will keep them out the majority of the season.
If you go back, I would wager that every offseason we see players that could have had surgery earlier for a chronic condition or something that they'd dealth with the playoffs or season before, but end up wasting a good part of the offseason and missing the majority of all of the season in recovery.
Even Henrik Lundqvist who has had the same heart issue for his entire career, suddenly less than a month before the season, it's gotten to a place where he's going to miss the entirety of it.
If anything, there's no guarantee Kucherov will be back in time for the playoffs. Hip surgery could keep him out six months or a little more. So having it now is cutting it close.
