I'm not sure.

I think there are a lot of people, specifically in Alberta, that are quietly Trump supporters.

Disturbs the crap out of me, but I think it's true.

We aren't immune to the right vs left echo chambers. I've seen a lot of people I know sharing sketchy right wing nonsense on Facebook this year.

I know a surprising amount of people who are obsessed with lower taxes for the rich, low corporate taxes, hate immigrants and want to abolish the social safety net. Some even tell me American health care is miles better and they’d rather be there during covid than here.

Not surprisingly the most common traits were old and white. Followed by wealthy. More men than women.

I voted for Biden (in the poll). I don't think he's good, but he's the least bad IMO.

I know plenty of would-be Trump voters though. There are a lot of reasons, so let me put a few down:

a) The economy: Trump had the economy doing very well, and they don't have the same confidence in Biden.

b) Taxes: Biden will probably increase them and who wants to pay more?

c) Trade: Trump has talked tough on trade and worked hard so that the US isn't taken advantage of. Biden would be much softer.

d) The state of the Democrats: There is a very leftist, socialist element in the democratic party and they should be far away from power.

This poll isn't all that reflective as what I hear in talking to people. I generally avoid the conversation, but people are super worked up and think that one of the two is crazy and shouldn't be in power...and it's really more split than I would have thought in terms of which party that is.

I am actually comforted that it's so low. It's never going to be zero as people will always vote emotionally or based on belief systems that are deeply engrained. Trumpet taps into those belief systems pretty well, even if he is a charlatan.

No, the good news is that so many would not vote for him. An overwhelming majority. That makes me happy to see.

I’m not shocked at the Trump votes, I’m shocked at how little there are. As I post this I see 85% of people voted for Biden.

The political threads on CP, particularly the American ones, are largely frequented by left-leaning posters so I’m wondering if some right wing people just avoid these threads all together?

Maybe, but I think in general Canadian conservatives find Trump to be revolting like most people do.

I take it you rarely venture into the Canadian politics thread?

Admittedly I don’t. I usually just check in on the American thread every three or four weeks, or if an major event happens.

I am befuddled why anyone would vote Trump, but 85% saying they would vote Biden represents a pretty extreme outcome for a poll like this. I was expecting closer to 20% on the Trump side.

You gotta remember Canadian politics (UCP notwithstanding) are so far left of the Democrats that Canadians are considered socialist by American standards.

This forum probably skews hard towards white, college-educated males as a demographic. Also, being a Calgary forum, it’s likely more conservative than other, similar hockey forums, though it’s also likely older due to how long it’s been around and that you have places like twitter, r/hockey, r/CalgaryFlames, and the festering cesspit of HFBoards which are likely sucking up a lot of younger possible participants.

Older, white, conservative males are Trump’s wheelhouse, though the education level I’m assuming kinda pushes us as a group more towards Biden.

I think the result speaks to the powerful reaction Trump engenders in people. As much as he has his loyalists, People who dislike him tend to really dislike him!

Canadians are socialist by American standards. No consideration required.

Really important point. I don't know how old this is, but it's close I think. The Conservatives might even now be above the "social liberalism" line with O'Toole replacing Scheer. Our "right" aligns as close to the American left as it does the American right.

Derek Sloan and Leslyn Lewis got way too many votes in the Conservative leadership election to start considering them above the social liberalism line, though I hope O'Toole can keep them going that way.

That doesn't seem right. Even with Scheer, the CPC were more in line with the median Canadian voter than you would think.

Good points. Most of my US work contacts are all voting Trump as well including blacks and Latinos I know. B and D are their reasons. Providing for their family is top priority.

The Macleans poll show 32 per cent of Albertans as pro-Trump. So CP members (at least those active in political threads) are not representative of Albertans. Presumably because this site skews young and educated.
