is it going to be quicker? I assume they still give everyone a 5 minute clock between selections, might be a lot of calls still coming through to delay things.

Helge Grans is a player I would love to see fall to the Flames in the second round.

From Smaht Scouting:

He skates well, with good power and impressive edge work, and while he is already a big boy he does not look close to being finished filling out. He also possesses nice puck skills, and he uses that ability alongside his skating to regularly skate out of trouble and send play the other way.

Yeah, it's still scheduled for a 3 hour broadcast, so I think they'll still be doing the usually between-pick interviews and analysis.

I guess I meant quicker ceremonies. There actually might be more time to deal because the staff won;t be running around.

My hopes for this draft: get a few bigger players. We need this team to get bigger and meaner. Skip 5'9'' wingers and draft a couple of large defensemen. William Wallinder in the 1st would be a good step in the right direction, I believe. Solid, reliable, low-risk bet.

In relative terms, yes. Wallinder is highly ranked 1st round prospect.

This is the opposite strategy of what the team should have. Being big is a plus, but should not be the determining factor in drafting a player. If the player is skilled, can skate, and has produced as a junior while also happening to be big then great. But drafting size for the sake of being big is the wrong strategy.

I am happy you are not running our draft.

(Edit: Nothing against Wallinder who's actually a fine prospect but because he actually combines skating and skill with size. 19 is still too early for him though. Drafting size for the sake of drafting size is the issue. )

I know, I'm just making the point that if you prioritize size over skill while drafting you are more likely going to have way more misses than hits.

Beyond that, drafting a player at 19 for a need that you identify today is just stupid.

It's probably 2-3 years at best before you see this player compete to make an NHL roster. Who knows what the team's strengths and weaknesses will be.

Just draft the best guy at the game of hockey.

big day for Austrian hockey ... really hope Rossi goes to Detroit at 4, don't really like most of the other potential landing spots for him. Either way, great to have another potentially great player to follow now that Vanek is out of the league.

but boo-urns for having a draft on a Tuesday instead of a weekend. Blows.

On TSN McKenzie says the Rangers are making Alexis Lafreniere sweat a little bit. Says the Rangers have decided to take him with 1st OA but haven't told him.

I've got a draft related question I've always wondered.

Do teams submit the pick before going up to announce the pick? Or is the verbal announcement of the player the official submission?

I think it's like the NFL, where the submission of the pick stops the clock.
edit : now I searched a couple of places saying that the clock is metaphysical. Either way, the name is submitted.
double edit : four different sites say four different things. I don't think that the NHL cares.
triple edit : the only one that was specific said 3 minutes, with 5 timeouts, and announcements don't count against it. So literally as much time as you want. No word on how the names are received by the league. Carrier pigeon?
