But it does have some risk associated with it, because there's a non-zero chance that he's just not a $5M player anymore at all, much less for 3 years. So it's a gamble to give him that money".

But we're not in a UFA situation. In this situation, not only do you have to take on the risk of that $5Mx3 deal, but you have to give something to Tampa for the privilege of taking on that risk. If it's a 7th rounder, or future considerations, maybe that's okay, because those have little to no value. But Tampa got a first rounder + from the Canucks for Miller last year. Do you really think they're expecting less than a 3rd for Johnson? I don't.
Well said

If it was a UFA signing I'd think it's about 1 mil too much but that's not too bad

But to give up some big assets to get an overpaid player on top of it, nah.

I watched Johnson and Palat closely, as it is no surprise TB needs to shed salary and those guys certainly have some skill. Johnson is a solid player, no doubt, but he can't be a priority for the Flames who have limited cap space themselves. He feels like a slightly better Mangiapane at this stage.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

I can see Lightning making a three way trade for one of their players, with Red Wings holding a part of the contract for an asset/or two. Not sure if Johnson will be a candidate for such a setup though, since he has sizeable term.

Jeeze, already been 5 years removed from him being a point-per-game player and easy Conn Smyth winner had the Lightning somehow defeated the Hawks.

Still, for the right deal, I would take a flyer on him. He's a year removed from a 30 goal season.

per Dreger Johnson has given the Lightning a decent list to work with:

Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger
Tyler Johnson has given the Tampa Bay Lightning several teams to work with in the quest for trade. Sources say the list includes a mix of teams league wide. Good communication between Lightning GM, Julien BriseBois and the Johnson camp.

I won’t be averse to bringing Johnson in, but if Lightning hold back some cap (or use a third team to do so) and the return isn’t too crazy. Looking at how cap dump trades have happened over the last couple of years, the price on acquiring Johnson might not be too high.
