Nevermind, I found it again and it was about Matt Dumba. I miss-read Matt Dumba as Matt Duchene
Carry on.
Or we can wait to see if Eklund reports Duchene to Minny (E5) in which case we'll know he reads CP.

Still waiting for "Flames trade ----" / "Flames acquire ----"
Feel like I've been waiting two years for a significant thread with that title.
It might not be a massive upgrade of some kind, but a pretty big splash needs to be made with this roster and core and this offseason.
The overall direction needs to be altered cause the current one isn't trending towards "contender".

I think that sometimes players try to project who would try to trade for them, and strategically select teams, so they can effectively turn their partial NTC into a full NTC.
Backfired in this case

Pretty sure Johansson played a lot of C last year (with Skinner and another pure winger).
Both players will fetch a good price at TDL if their teams are out of it.
Johansson is an ideal linemate to help develop a young C...

First Line Centre
|
Johansson is a middle 6 winger who can play center but isn’t overly great there.
One would think his value is, at best, a 3rd rd pick.
Even if Staal retires that’s a good move to shed the salary as now Buffalo can re-sign RFA forwards Olofsson, Reinhart, Thompson and Kahun/Lazar and use picks/prospect/their plethora of dmen 27yo and under to revamp their forwards.
If he doesn’t retire you can do the same but have a cheaper and actual top 6 center in the mix as well.
Not very often I find the team who traded a 35yo for a 29yo the loser of a trade..

Last time I remember seeing a 35 year old C traded for a 29 year old winger was Langkow for Stempniak

Absolutely I would even add something to the mix to get that done. I would be wondering what the hell the Wild are doing if they made that trade.

Stempniak was 28, but close enough.
The Flames definitely won that trade. Partially because he re-signed for 2 years at 2.5 mill per if I remember correctly.

Sure Staal is older, but both guys are UFA and MoJo is still 30 so not like he’s young.
I like this for Buffalo, gives them a stop gap on second line C which was a huge position of need for them without having to pay a premium.
|
I agree. People get hung up on the age but Johansen isn't getting any better and makes more and its only for 1 year. Staal still a good player and the extra cap space might allow them to add someone good.

A few points.
1. The playoffs aren't even over, it's way too soon to know what they are doing.
2. A conditional 7th for a healthy Bjugstad who is a serious bounce back candidate at 50% retained has the potential to be an absolutely fantastic move.
3. This move has me scratching my head.

Came here to post just this.
COVID likely makes this suck less, but this likely wasn't a happy day at the sod farm.

Yeah, I read something a while back about how much he loved Minnesota and bought a permanent home there because he's a winter guy and it is similar to where he grew up.
But Buffalo isn't that much different. It's a little damper in the winter, but still lots of snow at least.

Or he's like whitey from me myself and Irene and he has all the Southern teams on his list.
I do have to wonder how many times Kevyn Adam's had to say come on I'm not falling for this trick he has a no trade clause we must be on the list.

I think Guerin absolutely wants them to be bad so he can draft top 3 for a couple of years. They are stuck in that perpetual wheel of mediocrity that they can't seem to break out of. This should help them be weaker. Erik Staal was a really good free agent signing for the Wild.

This is the right year to take that strategy. But why not lean into it and get quality picks/prospects to take back some money...it doesn't even have to be really bad money:
What would STL have paid to upgrade Bozak and save 1.75M?
Same question for VGK with Stastny and 2.25M?
Both of those guys have 10 team NTCs, so perhaps not possible. But, one would think MIN should've gotten more value from taking on more AAV and real money.
