I got their jersey and hat for Christmas in their first season and absolutely loved them (exclusively based on the name/logo/jersey) until I fell in love with the flames around when we got Iggy.

Point is like Brad Richards where he's a #64 overall pick in the 3rd round by the Lightning who has become a player that the Flames or any other NHL team wishes they had taken.

As others note...if it was so easy, Tampa would have taken him much earlier too.

Hopefully the Isles can regroup and get back to their style of hockey and take the series. Sometimes teams who didn't do great in the playoffs the previous year learn something and take it all the next year. See the 96 Avalanche who lost in round 1 to the Rangers the previous year as the Nordiques, then went all the way the next year. 97 Red Wings lost to that Avs team the previous year after an exceptional regular season...they meant business the next year in the playoffs.

Not saying Point would have developed the same way in Calgary necessarily, but he would have been a lot better than Hunter Fricking Smith.
Hunter Smith had an assist in his draft year though, hard to overlook that type of upside.

And Torts was a bit of dick, but I don't even mind him post-Canucks.

The rest of that team - Lecavallier, Andreychuk, Boyle, Richards, Sarich, Stillman, Modin - not really hateable.
Richards and St. Louis are villains and are hated. The Flames were cheated out of a Stanley Cup.

The 96 Red Wings lost to the Avs in the 3rd round. Yes, they had an amazing regular season, but, it wasn't a 1st round upset. The 94 Red Wings were upset by the Sharks in the 1st round and then made it to the finals in 95 only to lose to the Devils.

Flames 3rd round pick - Brandon Hickey - pick 64. Point - Pick 79
That was a Burke draft as Hunter Smith is a classic Burke pick. Yes it sucks that the Flames made several mistakes in that draft but you will go crazy if you agonize over every botched draft pick by your favorite team.

TB had two picks ahead of Point that have yet to play an NHL game.

Yeah watching that Flames 2014 draft Saturday was almost bad enough to chug a bottle of bleach.

Watching the Flames pass on Brayden Point, whom I and many others including CP's own Chris Ralph, had marked as a mid-first round talent for:
- A goalie (why!) with pedestrian performance, in the second round.
- A draft +1 player who managed 1 assist in his draft year, and didn't even crack my top 300 draft-eligible prospects, in the second round.
- And while I had Hickey in the 150 range so not a hater by any means (and certainly better than the previous two), you have a top 20 pick still there.

#### me.

Also, this. Kid completely demolishes the WHL on a crappy team with no help from his teammates (whom he outscored by 36 points despite being younger) but oh #### his force plate! Put him on the do-not-draft list! Up there with the team who put Jake Guentzel on their do-not-draft list because his wrist circumference was too small for their liking.

Amazing.

Just about every organization has completely blown a draft in the last 5-10 years. It's part and parcel with drafting. Sometimes teams make good picks and things just don't turn out.

The key is to continue to make picks.

What really hurts about the hunter smith/mason mcdonald isn't that they struck out, it's that they didn't make a 2nd round pick the year prior or a 1st and a 3rd round pick the year after.

Those were the start and middle of the 'rebuild' years. Tampa had a 101 point season that year and still managed to out-pick the Flames team that finished with 77 points.

What hurt's about the McDonald, Smith, and Kanzig picks is that we all knew they were awful picks at the time. No need for hindsight.

The Wotherspoon, Hickey, and Klimchuk picks aren't quite as rage-inducing, because they at least seemed reasonable at the time.

It's crazy how rarely a 5 minute major PP seems to be an advantage over a minor.

Very true, but the Richards pick always bugged me because he was taken with the Flames pick (not that it really makes a difference).
