Well there's always going to be speculation that aspiring actress Janet from L.A. had Gretzky pick the Kings. She was called Yoko Ono etc. But they deny it to this day. Latest story being that it was Walter who wanted him to choose L.A.
Nylander agreed to sign with Edmonton, only to have his wife veto the contract before the paperwork was done.
But behind the scenes, I'm sure there's a lot of times where a player's wife has more than a passing say in where they live. Or at least I very very very hope they have some form of say. Probably not a lot of times where it's "Demand a trade today" (that's pretty much reserved for Edmonton) but "let's at least consider offers from this team".
Gretzky claims his wife told him to pick Detroit and Walter said LA. NYR was the other choice they had. Not sure Janet wasn't correct.
Actually when Gaudreau said Calgary is his second home, he also mentioned how much his girlfriend loves the city too
Shhh, don't bring facts into this. She is clearly lying just like Johnny and they both are in BT's office right now demanding a trade back East! I am sure reliable journalist Eric Francis will confirm.
Didn't Ovi win the Cup finally after having his first kid?
Perhaps so!! I was just going by personal experience lol. Life changed- for the best in many senses- but it would be wrong of me to say that my focus hasn't shifted pretty considerably, likely to the detriment of my work performance.
I would say that the posters saying the spouse has no say in all of this are not married, or perhaps divorced.
I don’t really think anyone is saying that. At most people are saying where his spouse is from won’t dictate where he plays.
Moving for career reasons is not exactly unheard of. Being a pro athlete, or part of their immediate family, means you can expect some moves over the course of what is, generally speaking, a very short career.
It's funny how no matter the thread, Johnny wanting to leave always comes up
Why would anyone be surprised he's engaged to a girl from his hometown? Most players are I'd bet
Other than Prongers wife wanting out of Edmonton, how often do players wives dictate which team a guy plays for?
Monahans fiances sister is Casey Cizikas wife, should we be concerned that Monahan is going to want to play for the Islanders now so the sisters can be close and he can play with his brother in law?
You don't think it affects where UFA's sign? Sure, it's often not the sole reason, or the main reason, but as with any other job, if you've got multiple options, you'll be looking at a host of things, including where you and your wife want to be. Money will be a primary driving factor, but so will family lifestyle. I think it's naive to think where a hockey player's wife / gf wants to live and / or work doesn't factor into what team a player chooses.

Of course. I wasn't very clear. I'm moreso talking about the neverending assumption that Gaudreau wouldn't want to sign his RFA deals or how he wants to be traded out east in the middle of his contract, and now his SO being from out there adds to this
As a UFA of course family plays a huge part in where someone decide to play
Where a Flames players wife is from has never been a concern before, it's just funny how these things only come up when talking about Johnny

Sorry, I didn't explain myself well. You're absolutely right, when signing a contract family has to have a huge say. I think my family would be the #1 factor if I was deciding where to go
The guy is American. His family and now fiancée live on the east coast and his stock is slipping here
Anyone who thinks he hasn’t asked to be moved needs to take off their homer glasses
Wut? I don't think he has asked to be moved.
Pretty much the entire team isn't from Calgary. I would venture most are married or have girlfriends that aren't from here either.
What you said in the first paragraph has very little bearing on the second for a guy with 2 years left on his contract.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

Gaudreau could say word for word that he has not asked to be traded and does not want to be traded and Flames fans would say "well of course that's what somebody who wants to be traded would say".
