Play the crap out of the top 9 at even strength.
I still just don't understand if changes are happening why Monahan and Gaudreau get kept together. They're the ineffective duo that is killing their line (Lindholm isn't helping - but he's used as the finisher on that line most times).

Backlund is shutting down so do you want Gaudreau there?

You also don’t want to bust up the Bennett line.

It’s tough.

The Stars attack is generated from the point, with Klingberg and Heiskanen. So what do the Flames do? Collapse down low and leave the points exposed.

Bold strategy Cotton!

It hasn't worked at all so far - Klingberg and Heiskanen lead the Stars in points - but maybe, for some bizarre reason, it will start to work tonight.

Let's keep running with the stay-in-your-lanes, 5-man-unit, collapse-to-the-middle, dump-the-puck-to-the-boards strategies that have been so effective to this point!

I believe!

I agree with Comix; looking at Toews/Kane they played a lot together 5 on 5 early on but the Hawks true dominance came when splitting those two up 5 on 5 but keeping them together while on the PP.

If Tkachuk is healthy this is what I want to see :

Gaudreau - Backlund - Lindholm
Tkachuk - Monahan - Mangiapane
Lucic - Bennett - Dube
Reider - Jankowski - Ryan (Ryan takes strong side draws)

The other thing that triggered the Hawks dominance was firing Savard and replacing him with Quennville.

If Zac Rinaldo is on the ice tonight, I will be convinced 100% that Geoff Ward is not an NHL calibre coach.

They’re doing this because retreating/collapsing worked so well against the Avs last season.

Flames come out squeezing their sticks, get scored on in the first 30 seconds, then play their absolute best hockey of the decade for the next 59:30. Lose 4-1.

What do they call garbage bag day in Edmonton? Friday?

Yeah it's a tough spot to be in but if you are making changes, then have them be larger.

Dube - Bennett - Gaudreau
Lucic - Monahan - Lindholm
Mangiapane - Backlund - Ryan
Jankowski - Quine - Rieder

But, I think you just double down on it at this stage and push with your top players.

Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm
Lucic - Bennett - Dube
Mangiapane - Backlund - Ryan
Jankowski - Quine - Rieder

Law of averages. It’s time. The Flames playoff fortunes will change and win a game 6. Win the following game 7 and for once get a W in the overall star that they are oh-for 7? When trailing 3 games to 2.

I am fully expecting a repeat of game 5 last year. Just flat. In a way it wouldn't be bad. Leave no doubt as to what management needs to do.

My biggest concern if the team plays well tonight it will be one of the nights Talbot is not at his best. Flames will be throwing everything at the Stars but lose by one goal and there will be at least 2 goals Talbot will wish he had back

Unless you're the Russians facing a land invasion, retreating and collapsing never seems to work. The Flames only ever find success when they are the ones pushing hard and being aggressive. As soon a they let the other team dictate the play, it's over.

I think the Blues did ok after going down 3-2 to Dallas.
So you're saying that we win this 4-1 today and 2-1 in double overtime on Saturday so Dallas experiences Déjà vu all over again?

I like it even though I don't know how I would get through a game seven double overtime butt-clencher!

If we win I am getting hammed and going to work hungover tomorrow.

I haven't gone to work hungover in 10+ years. This is my commitment to you.
