Either way, when it gets this far it sounds like it’s completely over.

I know he signed a contract, but with these deals, doesn't it just prohibit you from jumping ship to another NHL franchise without upper management permission? If he wanted to jump to an MLB team or move to the corporate world, or do his own business, surely that contract couldn't hold him back would it?

I guess a contract is a contract. Each side owes what is promised except as otherwise specifically carved out.

But to your point, if a guy doesn’t want to be your GM anymore, why keep him around if he’s not going to compete with you?

He has had pretty crappy linemates. Keller should be a 70-80 point guy in the near future.

He was on pace for 52 this year. Not really his fault the world got shut down for COVID

He produces 0.67 points per game, that's just a plain simple fact. And he's only 21, which is pretty indicative of him not even being close to his ceiling yet.

I don’t think Johnny would have been able to produce at Keller’s level when he was 19 or 20.

When was the last time a player produced more than 70 points in a Coyotes jersey?

Chayka's time as GM has been positively beige, with periodic highlights in taupe.

I wonder if he was offered CEO of a restaurant franchise. He has experience with franchises and as a general manager. I could see a private equity firm purchasing pizza hut out of bankruptcy and throwing gobs of money to a guy they like for CEO

I'm most interested in hearing what kind of offer he received that was good enough to walk away from a 3-year guaranteed contract as an NHL GM.

He must have a substantial offer with someone to walk away from three years of guaranteed money. I thought his body of work overall was pretty mediocre but beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

The Yotes pulling no punches about what they think of this: https://www.nhl.com/coyotes/news/ari...nt/c-317637708

Quote:
"John Chayka has quit as the General Manager and President of Hockey Operations of the Arizona Coyotes.

"The Club is disappointed in his actions and his timing as the Coyotes prepare to enter the NHL's hub city of Edmonton, where the team will begin post-season play for the first time since 2012. Chayka has chosen to quit on a strong and competitive team, a dedicated staff, and the Arizona Coyotes fans, the greatest fans in the NHL."

Hopefully whatever he has chosen to do, it works out for him because he will likely never be hired as a GM in the NHL again.

The word 'quit' is about as nasty and negative of a word as they could possibly use in a public statement. And they used it twice.

Chayka's response...

This is quite the soap opera: https://azcoyotesinsider.substack.co...ayka-is-a-liar

Just when it looked like things might actually stabilize for the Coyotes for the first time in a decade, it looks like the circus is back in town.
