I honestly think Kevin Millwood is the best Pitcher on the Market, not AJ Burnett, however it looks like Burnett is going to get the most money.
Zito will cost a lot, look at the Mulder/Hudson deals last season and the type of talent that they had to give up. A couple of very promising prospects/future starters, and to be quite honest I don't think Toronto has the talent to match.
We have a couple promising pitchers, but none at the AAA level yet, and I think Oakland might more be leaning towards that.
I do agree about BJ Ryan though... Really an unproven pitcher. Only 1 season as a closer. You can analyze him numbers to death (which look good K/BB ratios, etc), but it still is a large risk.

I like the BJ Ryan deal he is a very good closer. Did the Jays pay to much probably, but they needed a closer now they have one. As for AJ it would be great if he signs with the Jays but I believe its a 50/50 chance.

The issue I have with Ryan is the length of the deal. That contract is going to be a real albatross if he goes in the tank this (or any of the next three) seasons.
Zito would cost a lot, but in my mind it's a much better chance that you'll get what you're paying for, in comparison to Burnett. And Kevin Millwood would be much better, I agree. Signs do seem to be pointing towards a Burnett signing.

I understand the caution around the Ryan deal. But plain and simple, if you had to get the guy a 5th year to snag him then so be it. It does a lot for your fan base and it shows the Jays are serious on making the playoffs. As for the money part of it, it wasen't like the Jays just threw this number out the first time they saw him. They we're simply competing against other teams who were offering nearly just as much.

Just saw on Sportcentre on TSN that someone from ESPN at the winter meetings was saying he expects Burnett to accept the Jays new offer of approx. 5 years/55 million and we could hear something in the next hour or so.
Take it for what it's worth.

I don't know about that - if they can get a big bat in their lineup - they will be right up there with the Yanks and Sox battling it out. Halladay, Burnett and Chacin is a pretty nice start to their rotation.

How do you figure? They did well last year, they have added a Solid Closer, they will add another Pitcher plus they will add a Batter. I'd like to hear why you think they will struggle?

ESPN and other sources seem to think the Jays are very close at landing Burnett. This is huge for the team if they can pull this off, our rotation would be up there with the best rotations in the AL.
There was also a rumour on the score that once the AJ deal is done the Jays may ship Batista for Wilkerson. That be great to have Wilkerson back in Canada, loved this guy as a spo

Frick. If the Jays landed Wilkerson I would be ecstatic. Under-rated player in my opinion.

Any announcment on the Burrnett signing will be final at the earliest by tommorow. Crossing the I's dotting the T's is what the TSN reporter said. JP will not make any moves until he knows whether or not he has AJ locked up.

So would they move Vernon Wells if that happened?? I know it will never happen but how about a Sheffield for Wells trade Gets the Jays a big bat and Yanks get their CF without overpaying for Damon and his noodle arm

At the meetings, Abreu @ 15 million per was offered straight up for Wells.
JP said no.
Abreu is a better all around player than Sheff is (one of the best in the game).

I wouldn't do that deal either - I am a little leery about Abreu, he slumped pretty bad in the second half of the season and the Phillies really seem to want to get rid of him rather badly. Still he's a much better player than Sheff, who should now only be a DH - he is brutal in the field.

Looks like AJ's agent was trying to get the Cards to budge to 5 years and it's just not gonna happen. AJ should be a Blue Jay by tommorow. Jp has said the Jays do have a backup plan if this falls through.
Then it's on to working on the lineup, I don't see the Jays landing a #3 guy with 30 plus homers and 100 plus rbi's but I think a guy like Mench or Wilkerson (Wilkerson would just be awsome, guy can put up good power numbers still very young and he's a gamer) along with someone else I like there lineup.

Yeah, lets trade a guy with a ton of talent, even if he hasnt fully figured it out yet, to a division rival we need to pass, for an old player on the decline.
Can we give you Roy Halladay for Carl Pavano while we are at it?

Just heard on Sportsnet news (no internet link yet) that some other team has pulled the over the top move on the button and upped the ante for Burnet. They didn't say who it is just that it is not St.Louis. But if you have to go over 11 million a year for 5 years I'm afraid that you have to let him walk. Decent talent, but thats too much to pay a guy who has yet to establish himself as a consistant 1-2 starting pitcher.
