Surprise, surprise. MS put out a defective product.
Quote:
According to Molly O'Donnell, Microsoft's spokesperson, only 15% of the users are facing the problem and she even stated that on a launch of this magnitude, problems were bound to arise.

Only 15% are defective? You'd think that they would strive to have less than 1% defective. Nope, not Microsoft.
I'd suspect the number to be higher than 15% though. Probably not everybody contacted MS. There may have been others who tried to sell their machine on eBay after they found it to be defective. Others who simply returned it to the store.
Anybody here on CP who bought an XBOX 360 experience any problems?
I was reading in another article or forum that the problems seem to be limited to the premium console, not the core. However unless you want to buy the core and all the upgrades, which costs quite a bit more than the premium, you are pretty limited as to what you can do with the console.

Here's the reuters article with the comments by Molly O'Donnell.

No where does it mention 15%.
Just like every other launch, hyperbole and overreaction are the order of the day.

So for those that have it, what are your thoughts? It's been a couple of days and I'm curious as to what you all think right now.

I heard that quite a few people are having overheating issues with their Xbox 360. Anyone here had any problems?

How is it scapling? It's not illegal to buy something and sell it for more. It's called an investment. If people are stupid enough to pay $1000 for it, so let them. Xbox's are not tickets for a sporting event. Nowhere does it say you can't do it.

That's the only article I've seen that has any sort of percentage attached to it. All others suggest "a limited number" of complaints. I know plenty of people who bought one on the first day and there are all the review sites that have them and this is the first I've heard of it. Seems to me that I probably should have heard about atleast one case by now. Not to say that there aren't defective units...there will be. I guess the real questions are simply what is the percentage? will it be as bad as PS2 which is reknown for being the most problematic console to date? And will Sony invest in product quality with the PS3 that they never did with the PS2?
electronic is a funny thing everything has to be precise. About 75% of chips made do not pass spec.

I haven't had any problems yet. But I haven't had the time to play for hours at a time so I can't comment on what extended use will do.
The thing does kick out alot of heat. I was going to put it in my entertainment center but when I noticed how much hot air was pumping out the back, I nixed that idea and left it on the side where there is lots of airflow. I already cut a hole in the back and use a small fan for my receiver, don't want another one.
Some people have complained about noise..the fans and disc drive. The fans are noisy, but not overly so. I'd say it compares to a computer. The disc drive in mine isn't very loud either. I have it sitting horizontally, maybe those who find it loud have them standing vertically?

Just to add...gamespot is on record as saying none of their people have had any problems with the 360's they picked up. Seems to be simply a vocal minority.

Mine's been fine, though I will say it is quite noisy; far louder than my computer though I've made a point of making a silent computer.

The overheating problem seems to lie with the power supplies, when they're in confined spaces(like inside an entertainment unit), or sitting on carpet. I think it's a defect they should have realized, but the instructins do say not to put i on carpet, or in an entertanment unit.

Thats plain ######ed. With that type of money, you couold wait six months, and then build a pc that will out class all of the graphics of the next gens for that money. The power that you could get for that money. Honestly, I don't understand getting consoles that are basically computers. The only consoles I get are Nintendo ones, because they have games that are never available for pc. Plus, the quality of games that Nintendo brings out is amazing.
Really, why spend that kind of money. Build a beastly computer for all the EA games and whatnot, then get the revolution. I think that will be the way to go. (and if you desperately need one of the other consoles wait one or two proce drops).

For $4000 you could but for $400 you aren't going to be able to build a beastly computer. Let alone that if you build a beastly computer you constantly have to upgrade the thing costing money every year. A console doesn't. Not to mention the whole host of other problems gaming on a computer can have such as conflicts etc etc etc.
To be perfectly honest gaming on a console is just more confortable. I much rather game on my 36 in high definition widescreen TV that I already have and put down another $400 instead of investing in the things needed to make the gaming experience as comfortable and nice on a PC. Simple as that. Well and when EA starts to make good games again (beyond FIFA) PC gaming isn't really an option anyways.

Now here is a quote in today's USA Today:
Quote:
Microsoft's Molly O'Donnell says the company has "a weekly replenishment strategy." The first follow-up shipment "is on the way, and it should be on retailers' shelves by the end of the week or for the weekend."

This story pertains to the discussion of the morality of charging higher than retail for a xbox. If an individual doing it is bad, what does it make a corporation who does it?

In both cases it's simply business. I fsomeone wants to pay stupid prices on an item that is not price controlled more power to the seller. When all the other shps get their 360's and JC Penney is still trying to charge $899 the price will come down instantly at their stores and they'll be plenty of returns from the people they tried to hose.

Yeah, that's exactly what they do.
And if you don't play them enough they'll sneak into your room at night and bite your fingers off.

I'll stick with my GameCube, N64 and PSUno for a couple more years, thank you very much!
Can't believe how people will rush out and spend hundreds of dollars just to have the latest little toy.
