Only thing that scares me about a potential BOA is the Oilers' ridiculous PP. Flames would have to try and play infraction-free hockey for 7 games, as every penalty is basically an automatic goal for the Oil.

5 on 5, I think Calgary's superior depth would dominate IMO.

Also super proud of Talbot for closing the door after the first! That resilience is what we need from the G at home.
Nothing against Talbot he was fine but did the BJ's even have a quality chance after the first?

One of the things I'm happiest about is Gaudreau's hustle. Noticeable in most games more often than not as of late. It's good to see. Go Johnny Go!

Go Flames Go!

It was so hospitable of the Flames to spot CBJ two goals, and allow them to skate around the ice with the carefree leisure of Ice-Capades performers before finally showing up to play after 50 mins.

Such a friendly bunch.

Definitely. He's back to not giving up on plays, and fishing pucks out of tight situations to make something happen. Playing like the Johnny we know and love.

God damn. We had a 3-0 lead after 1 period in the 7th game...

Still have PTSD from that.

As great as Johnny and Monahan were on that goal, it makes me kind of mad that we don’t see that hustle and determination more often.

Not really, but a goalie can only stop the shots that he gets, and Talbot stopped them all.

On the other end, I still can't believe Korpisalo made some of those saves in the third and then on Monahan in OT. Brodie had to go top corner to get it past him

even just on the power play - trying to be so pretty - just dig for the puck and shoot it

sure but they could have used an early save...would have totally changed the game

Talbot was okay

He also almost blew it completely if Backlund didn't bail him out when he turned it over behind the net.

Really happy we pulled that win out, and Mangiapane’s forecheck on Lindy’s goal was the spark that made it all happen. #88 woke the team up. Fantastic to see.

That said, the first 50 minutes of tonight’s game were completely unacceptable. This team was just going through the motions and doing nothing to win the game. As a STH who attends the vast majority of games, it’s one of the few times where I was outright pissed off I was paying for that product. We have just seen way too much of that on home ice this year. Hopefully tonight can get the ball rolling.

sort of but no?

the biggest issue with Hartley hockey was the poor neutral zone play. This caused easy entries into our D zone and made entries into our O zone next to impossible.

in our D zone, the next biggest issue was breakouts too reliant on the stretch pass. If that wasn't an option we got hemmed in (ask Russell or Engelland). We also played a more passive style without the puck but so have a few other pretty good teams (2013/15 Blackhawks, 2016 Stars, 2017 Penguins) who have made some good runs in recent years. What really stood out though was the attention to detail with stick positioning and such. I don't think Giordano takes the step he took without Hartley working with him on those details, likewise Brodie. He would have been good for Kylington, Andersson, Valimaki, Hanifin, Bennett, Dube as well.

But what was great about Hartley Hockey was how the defensemen were involved in the offense. Even though our D still jump into the play it's not quite the same these days. Sometimes it resulted in a bad pinch but his teams usually backchecked pretty hard too. In fact having the F3 cover high was another area he coached really well.

I would also say that Hartley even in his final year 15-16 never had nearly the talent the past three coaches have had. Tkachuk, having four top four defensemen, Lindholm, Ryan, having decent goaltending. I bet he could do some interesting things with this year's bunch.

But yeah, he's unemployed by NHL standards for a reason. I'm no Hartley apologist. I just think he's the best of an underwhelming group of B. Sutter, Himself, Gulutzan, Peters, Ward.

The Jackets play a very stifling game - it has to be frustrating to go against it, especially since the Flames’ players are not the type who can easily bust through that D (fast outside players like MacKinnon or McWhathisname are better for that).

On the other hand, it’s not a style that is easy to maintain for 60 minutes, and it gives very few options when things go against you. And of players don’t buy in (Vancouver) it can’t work.

Frustrating game until the Flames got their first goal. Exciting finish and big win!
