We can all thank Tkachuk for that horrible contract.. the cult status he's taken on in Greaserville since jumping him from behind is probably what sealed this. Tkachuk just keeps on screwing that team over, I love it!

So, the Oilers will have a projected 19 million dollars to sign 5 forwards, 3 defenceman and a goalie to fill out the roster. Classic

Zack should pay Matt a big commission.

Holy moses, Tkachuk hits a guy twice and all of this has come pretty much as a result of it.

Kassian wasn't going anywhere tomorrow. Why sign him to this deal while his value is at the absolute peak of his entire career, half because of a ridiculous PR frenzy that will probably die out over the next week?

You could wait until this noise simmers down and he levels ou-....... actually nope, it's not even worth it. That team is just going to do what it's going to do.

One thing for sure, oilers media and their fans won't scrutinize the deal as much right now as they would in the offseason.

It's a 3rd line winger contract, except with an extra season added on. Whatever.

That’s a bargain contract. He’s a top line player.

Other than, you know, anyone else actually wanting either the player on their team or the contract on their books.

that really is a terrible contract...WIN/WIN for the rest of the league

Either he plays with McDavid and somewhat justifies it with point totals (Win)

Or he gets bumped down the lineup and is way overpaid (WIN)

Jeff Foxworthy might say "If you have to defend a contract using the Lucic deal as the standard....it just might be a bad contract"

The Oilers have ~10M tied up in Neal and Kassian for the next 4 years? Ha! Colour me stoked.

Give me Dube and Robinson for what 1.5. Wouldn't see nearly 9 million dollars difference in terms of play from those two.

Yeah, doesn’t matter he’s not going anywhere tomorrow.

It’s a 100% reactionary move that the one constant that organization has had the last 20 years, revels in and believes it earns him the title of smartest in hockey. Just like scooping Eakins out from under Vancouver’s nose...aftermath doesn’t matter, it’s the headlines and ability to get some national exposure that has been quenched for a few days.

It’s also why the organization is where it is. You think Holland, who never to my knowledge defending Kassian, or Tippett, jumped up and acclerated and signed off on this signing, at this time? Of course not. They were both outranked from above.

Like GM and coaches before them were as well. Soon they realize they have no say in the big decisions, and not long after they start mailing it in at best, or borderline trolling/sabotage/daring them to do something, as we saw with the last months of Chia.

If you count what they are paying Lucic and Sekera for the next 3 years, its close to 12 mil per season.

Never change Oilers. You should be selling high on McDavid’s wingers having career years, not signing them to 4 year extensions.

Also the timing seems strange. Kassian is the type of player you wait until the off season to re-sign. Announcing this just before the Flames game reeks of rewarding Kassian for his attack on Tkachuk while continuing to control the narrative that Kassian is a star player.
