Decent isn't good enough. You need to get a GREAT return to make it worth it.
Flames have butchered trading their high value players for scrubs or players that don't make much of an impact. Iginla and Phaneuf trades for example, granted Iginla was done too late. If you're gonna do it (and I believe they should), do it right. Teams want Gaudreau, make it a deal that Treliving can't refuse.

Brad’s hands are tied by Brad’s awful UFA contracts and his hesitation to pull the trigger when true studs like Stone come available.

He serves them often...doesn't kill and is a decent guy to have coming out of the box

If we continue to have Mony and Johnny as our top line we are screwed. These two should be demoted and play on PP only, if they do not suck on PP

This is not a knee-jerk reaction based on this game, but if I’m the Gm? I’m shopping Gaudreau big time. He’s not engaged at all this season. This team is BAD right now and he’s supposed to be their best player. Nowhere near good enough effort.

The common variable is we get the "bold moves" coaches and they suck.

This is like 2017-2018 but worse. You know these guys are way better than this, but they play so damn soft with no heart and passion. Such an embarrassment.

Tkachuk and Lindholm are good pieces to start a rebuild around up front.
Valimaki, Hanifin, Andersson are good pieces to start a rebuild around on the back end.
For Gaudreau - you could get a king's ransom (say two firsts and a high end prospect)
For Monahan - you could get a lot (say a high end centre prospect)
For Gio - you could trade at deadline for a 1st and a prospect
For Backlund - you could get a 1st and a good prospect
For Hamonic - you could get probably a 2nd at the deadline
For Brodie - you could get a decent young roster player at the deadline
Solid start to a rebuild. Go down to go up. Build around centres.

Game Takes: Vegas 6 Flames 0
- Flames hang in until third period implosion
- Gaudreau and Monahan both -5
- Dube looks good in season debut
- Hamonic injured and doesn't return

2.) Passion. Blaming the coach is easy and this team has had an embarrassing carousel of coaches over the last handful of years but the roster comes ill-prepared almost every night. What does Bill Peters actually do? The team has no chemistry and it appears teams have figured out his “system” from last year and he seems incapable in adjusting. Boring, perimeter play, constant puck turnovers, no sense of urgency whatsoever. Part of this falls on Gio as well, where is the leadership?
With limited assets and no cap room, it’s not like Tre will be able to make a serious improvement in-season so now we likely have to call a play from the Oiler fan playbook: embrace the tank and pray to the hockey gods for a lottery win. What a monumental cluster#### this season has been.
If you discount the miracle comebacks this year, we should be 8-12-1. 17 points, tied with LA for second last. Lovely.
|
I disagree with the first point... Reider is a great 4th line guy. He busts his tail every shift and isn’t a liability.
Talbot was an absolute rock tonight. Once the game gets out of hand, i don’t care about the soft ones.... he gave the team opportunity after opportunity to get back in it.
Lucic was for Neal... is what it is but it wasn’t like we went looking for him.
Gaudreau and Monahan have been terrible in many games this year and when they aren’t terrible, they are just average.
If you look at the goals and how the start, it’s almost always a turnover of some sort. Im convinced it’s the players effort level which is why I would be faking playing time from Gaudreau, Monahan & Jankowski.
You are spot on about the record without the comebacks and if we didn’t have stellar goaltending as we haven’t in the past, we likely lose another 4-5. This is my biggest concern. We won last year with poor goaltending some nights from Smith ... this year we can’t win with great goaltending.

Bringing in Lucic, Reider, Talbot, Davidson and almost Gryba really ramps up the Oilers stink on the team - a team with no success. I don't know why Tre thought this would make a positive difference. Hoping and living on a prayer?

Stone recently said he was basically only signing in Vegas. Tough to blame Tre for geography

I don't think a coaching change will fix the issue, but you can't fire the whole team. Is it time for a Fire Peters pole?

The Lucic trade killed this team. “Hey guys, I know Neal didn’t fit do, guess what? I’m bringing in the worst contract in the league”.
Seriously. This team got significantly worse on paper over the offseason. Combine that with 5 career years last year that predictably regressed and guess what? This team is what it has always been. Not a contender. Not even close.

I'm guessing we see a trade of a core player before Christmas.

Might need to be more than one core player CPF. One is not likely to make a difference.
