Your mistake was in saying that Gagner has to count $1.075 in cap hit. In fact, that's the maximum amount you save by burying him.
Otherwise tons of highly paid guys would be buried.

I guess I don't keep up with the goings on with the Islanders defence, but Thomas Hickey being on the waiver wire seems weird. Has he declined a lot in the past 2 years? His cap hit is only $2.5m / year for the next 3 years... As Coach said, young guys must be passing him. I remember him being a good defence first guy.
Interesting Quine goes down with no news about Dube yet ( I know he doesn't need waivers), I thought he was better than Czarnik in every game he played.

I think that is a no brainer for Edmonton. Would take Kassian off their PP.

$1.075M is the cap savings if you send a higher-paid player to the AHL. The rest of his salary still counts against your cap.
If they send Gagner down and claim Ho-Sang, it would only be a net cap savings of $200,000.
- With Gagner in NHL: $3.15M cap hit
- Gagner AHL/Ho-Sang NHL: $2.075M (Gagner non-buried cap) + $875,000 (Ho-Sang) = $2.95M total cap hit

Sorry, no. Both trades where the pick was acquired for the disappointing prospect who was nearing waiver eligibility looks golden for the team with the pick.

Right ...
But that's what I said.
Calgary gave up the player for a pick in trade one and profited.
Calgary gave up the pick for the player in trade two and lost.
hence ... balanced.

What happened to Sam Gagner the past few years? From having an 8-point game to now waiver cuts?

I totally read the cap friendly info wrong. Thought it was player cap hit - minus the min +375. I clearly am qualified to be the Oilers next GM. In that case, nothing to see here everything is fine...how is your day going?

Right, okay. I'm disagree with makes one easier to swallow however. The Lazar trade shouldn't have happened.

No argument there.
I liked the idea of Lazar, but not at that cost.

I wonder if the quality of the waiver wire will inspire a few trades. Notwithstanding a team could pick up a player for "free", the cap space is such an asset now. Perhaps moving a body (and a low pick) for that waived guy might be more palatable.

Does Sprong have a similar rep to Ho-Sang? If Flames management have issues with Ho-Sang, I have a feeling Sprong might be under the same banner.

The Flames don't have the space (lineup or cap-wise) to pick up forwards off waivers. Rieder likely starts on the opening day lineup, Dube is essentially NHL ready, and Czarnik needs some more playing time as well if we want him to develop at the NHL level.
Not surprised to see Quine go to Stockton, but I think he's shown enough that he should be the first forward called up. It was interesting to see him being interviewed by Ryan Leslie during the first intermission on Saturday night; I could tell they didn't really get into specifics about staying in Calgary and where he might play, and just talked generally about "starting the season".
