Im guessing he gets claimed. Someone always takes a goalie reclamation.

Questionable. What team out there doesn't have a better backup than him already? He has to stay in the NHL if claimed.

Even if that were the case, and I don't think it is, there are better ones available in that category. Louis Domingue just went through waivers and the Penguins have to make a decision on Tristan Jarry soon.

Just like every team has a couple AHL/NHL tweeners, they also have a bad goalie prospect. Not sure why someone always thinks these are unique assets once they're waived

I realize that. I was thinking of the Nicklas Grossman situation.

If someone really needed a backup that badly they would have claimed Stolarz the other day. He's been much better than Gillies at both AHL and NHL levels.
Gillies will be lucky to get another contract at this point.

I'm honestly thinking Mason McDonald will outperform Jon Gillies in the AHL this year

Pretty safe bet as neither will likely play in the AHL.

There is a couple of teams that appear to be low on the depth chart for goaltending. He may be a good backup in the AHL for another organization. I looked earlier in the week and I can't remember the teams. Maybe Florida was one of the teams? I didn't look for teams with lower amounts of netminders to see if they have their own AHL affiliate or if they share either.

As I understand it, if he’s claimed he must stay on the NHL roster all season.

I don't understand it. I also make little effort to do so.

Going to Europe is his best shot at decent hockey career at this point. That one way deal he insisted on, combined with his play ruined his chances. Now he has to step out of his comfort zone at try to take a long route to the NHL.

With the situation Gilles is in, other teams would wait until he had passed through waivers, and then if they really wanted him, they would trade another reclamation project of their own.
That way he could be sent to their AHL affiliate, and wouldn't take up an extra contract spot.

Gillies has never played in the ECHL. Frankly, that's were he may best be able to rebuild his confidence. Perhaps loaned to a team other than Kansas City.

There should be some goalies who have had actual NHL success start to appear on waivers soon I would think. Isn't that the case every year? McBackup and Nilsson were on waivers last year IIRC.

I was under the assumption he didn't need to stay in the NHL, but that he'd have to go through waivers again if sent down. Effectively keeping him in the NHL, due to circumstances and teams not wanting to waist the time/money, but not required.
Maybe the rules have changed, though.
