I like the vitriol. Pointless move, Stone's a plug.

Stone was a really solid defenseman in 2017-18 who simply got passed last year because of his injury. There is absolutely no downside to this signing, especially not at minimum salary.
Don't understand the vitriol I've seen about this signing here and elsewhere at all.
edit: and I also sincerely apologize to the posters who posted the rumour about this being a possibility -- it seemed preposterous at the time but I was clearly wrong about the situation. Thank you for sharing what you did.

I didn't like re-signing of Stone when we acquired Hamonic and I hate it even more today. They always talk about the game getting faster and Stone is below average in that department.
Terrible news IMO.

At 700K his whole salary can be buried in the minors.
Very definition of a no risk move

Yep Brodie is replaceable with a player that no other team in the league would give 800k.

It's not that linear.
A team may choose to downgrade their defense core in order to save cap space. It doesn't mean anyone thinks Stone and Brodie are comparable.

At league minimum this signing doesn't directly affect cap space at all.
And given the low amount it might actually be cheaper than the alternative contract they may have kept up for dman #7

Yup, it is not possible for this move to decrease our cap space.
It IS possible for this move to slightly increase our cap space.

There are no real cap implications here.
The Flames were always going to have a fight in camp for the 7D spot. It was looking like it would be between Yelesin, Davidson, Valiev, and MacDonald. Each of those guys would be making minimum, except Yelesin ($925k).
Now, Stone has been added to that pile (and he'll likely win the battle). So now you have a $700k seventh defenseman. That's what was going to happen all along. The rest of the guys to the AHL and don't count against the cap.

I can’t speak for anyone else, but I owe him an apology.
I was dead wrong, and I’m thankful you were willing to share your inside knowledge even though many (including myself) grilled you for it. I’m sorry. I hope my actions don’t dissuade you from sharing what you can in the future, even though no one could blame you if you didn’t.
Edit: this goes out to EverfresH15

$1.8 is a slight overpay for a guy like Stone, who can play 5-7 in the lineup, who can possibly play PK and actually has a shot that can be effective. It's too bad they can't consider his effective salary if they have to bury him (I assume they can't anyway). If that was the case they could bury almost the whole amount.

Surprised Stone couldn't get more from, say, Edmonton.
